Weekend plans don't need to be complicated 🌳🧺
Sometimes the best memories are made with a picnic blanket, their favourite snacks, and a day spent under the trees together.

We love Devon everyday but today we get to officially honour the culture, heritage, and natural beauty of the region.
With far reaching views we can't think of a better place to celebrate it than here at Haldon.

Wildlife Wednesday 🦇
Have you ever noticed flaky bark like this on a tree? It might not look like much to us, but to a bat, this looks like home 🦇😍

Most of the bat species found in the UK roost in trees. They use many features on trees, such as splits, cavities, old woodpecker holes, and flaking bark like this. These sorts of features often occur on dead or decaying trees, which is one of the reasons why we keep dead wood in the forest wherever it’s safe to do so.

A few days ago some of our rangers headed over to the Obelisk at Mamhead to do some tidying of the trails.
The nettles and bracken had encroached onto the trails making them narrow and difficult to access with a pushchair or wheelchair.
Despite the heat the team manged to widen the paths and open up a lovely seating area so once again the Obelisk can be enjoyed by everyone 💚

Here are a few before and after photos 📸

Who's your favourite Witch or Gruffalo?
Here at Haldon you don't need to decide we have them both!

Gruffalo Orienteering (maps £1.50 from the visitor information pod) and the Gruffalo sculpture.

Room on the Broom trail (activity parks £4 from the visitor information pod) is approximately 1.5 miles.

Both are pushchair friendly. Spend the day with us and complete both 👌

Forest Fact Friday 🌲

Fairy caps 🥰 The brown protective caps at the ends of the new growth on the trees. Have you noticed them? After they have done their job, they fall to the floor and are just big enough to fit on the end of your finger ☝

The new growth is bright green, a great contrast to last year's growth which is the darker green behind.

The colours of the new growth against the old is really quite stunning, making this a special time to walk in the forest
