Cat food pouches are currently undergoing a bit of a makeover.

For years, the situation was simple: pouches were all made from layers of plastic and foil laminated together and couldn’t be recycled from home. Brilliant at keeping pet food fresh; about as recyclable as a space suit.

Un-fusing those layers is a bit like trying to un-bake a cake.

However, recently some manufacturers have started producing pouches made entirely from polypropylene (PP), a plastic that is very much recyclable… with the right infrastructure.

But there’s a snag – one we hit before we even think about quality, weights, markets, destinations, and end-products.

The fact is, these new recyclable PP pouches look remarkably similar to the old non-recyclable foil ones. To recycling facility staff, they're about as different as two white Transit vans passing each other on the M5.

Thousands of items pass through every hour, and there's simply no practical way to stop and inspect every cat food pouch.

So, while some of these new PP pouches are technically recyclable, they still can't go into your recycling bin at home.

Not because the material is wrong, and not because the manufacturer has made a false claim. But because we can't reliably tell the difference between the different pouches at speed.

For now, PP pouches will still need taking to supermarket collection points along with their foiled counterparts, where flexible plastics are collected and processed separately.

That might sound frustrating, but it’s still progress.

Food waste is the key, here. If manufacturers can keep pet food fresh without relying on laminated foil, that's a genuine step forward. And if enough manufacturers eventually adopt the same material, we could reach a point where cat food pouches are accepted from home collections too – like toothpaste tubes are now.

As ever, recycling isn't just about whether something can be recycled. For something recyclable to be recycled, it needs to be identified and sorted in the first place.

I could go on about cans vs. pouches, recyclability vs. transportation vs. production – but I’ll stick to the basics for now. Pouches exist: can they be recycled?

You don't need to buy special bags for your food waste.

You DO need to bag your food waste, but not in the bags you might think you need.

All bags and liners are removed by machinery at the processing plant before the food is treated.

Yes, ALL bags. They're extracted and sent off to an Energy from Waste plant.

In fact, before you go dropping half the budget of your weekly shop on compostable liners, save your money. They can do more harm than good in a system that doesn't compost food waste.

That’s right: your food waste isn’t composted.

In fact, no food waste collected in Devon is composted. It’s treated by anaerobic digestion.

What’s the difference?

Composting uses oxygen to break down food and create soil improver.

Anaerobic means ‘without oxygen’. Processing food by anaerobic digestion allows the production of soil improver while also generating electricity.

Compostable plastic, therefore, requires oxygen to break down. In anaerobic conditions, it will break down about as fast as a canoe in space.

Which means compostable liners still have to be removed.

Problem is, they’re stretchier than a budget pair of leggings, making them much harder and more energy-intensive to separate.

Moreover, when they aren't actually composted, compostable bags can apparently have a larger carbon footprint than thin plastic bags.

So try not to use them.

Any old bag will do instead: bread bags, salad bags, frozen food bags, carrier bags, fruit bags, bread bags, cereal liners.

It may seem counterintuitive, but reusing old plastic bags gives them a second life, saves you money, and avoids using resources to manufacture brand new caddy liners.

It's a bit like getting two cups of tea from the same teabag.

If you've already got a stash of compostable liners, use them up. Once they're gone, save yourself some money and reuse old bags or buy cheap wastepaper basket liners instead.

And why bag food waste at all? Simple: so it doesn't spill over the collection crew when they empty the caddies. They wear PPE, but no-one wants to work a shift smelling like King Kong’s gym bag.

It's astonishing how many aluminium cans end up in hedgerows, on beaches and along footpaths across the UK.

Aluminium is one of the most valuable materials routinely collected for recycling, yet people abandon cans with a casualness they'd never apply to anything “genuinely” valuable. You don't see many people tossing keys into a ditch or posting coins through a hedge because they don’t like carrying change.

OK, that’s a stretch, but still.

My point is that a drinks can apparently gains several tonnes the moment the drink is finished, rendering its owner physically incapable of carrying it any further.

A minority of heroes correct this behaviour, volunteering their time to pick up and transport waste abandoned by complete strangers. It's a peculiar social arrangement: one person enjoys the drink, another carries the empty container home.

More public recycling bins may seem the obvious solution, but the costs mount quickly. More bins, separate collections, delivering different waste streams to separate locations, dealing with significant contamination - these are costs the value of the collected material does not cover, so the bill lands with financially pressured local authorities that have little say over the packaging producers use or what consumers buy.

It's rather like a restaurant deciding what to put on the menu, customers deciding what to order, and then everyone leaving the washing-up in the neighbour’s porch.

This is why Extended Producer Responsibility matters. If producers profit from selling something, they should contribute more towards managing it when it becomes waste.

Until then, much depends on individual behaviour. Recycling rates improve when people accept responsibility for the materials they consume.

If you buy a canned drink while you're out, be prepared to take the empty can home. Most people already carry phones, keys, wallets, bags, headphones, reusable cups, and enough miscellaneous possessions to survive for years in the wilderness should they make a wrong turn on the way to the shops. One empty can is unlikely to pose too much of a problem.

If carrying it home sounds unreasonable, then buying it may have been unreasonable.

Take Aluminium Can, who arrives polished, confident, and wearing mirrored sunglasses.

Aluminium Can is the star of the show – the icon who’s spent decades in the business and yet still looks as fresh now as the day it first appeared.

It doesn't need to reinvent itself. All these years, it’s performed essentially the same role under different names. Aluminium Can remains unmistakably Aluminium Can, whatever the script says. And it’s still as popular as ever.

Could it be trusted to branch out? Could it play, for instance, a traffic sign? Technically, yes. But what would be the point, when it can remain Aluminium Can and bring in more money than any other material in the plant?

Across the carpet, Milk Bottle is posing with calm authority.

Milk Bottle has arrived in just a flat cap and light jacket – functional and easily removed once inside. While other attendees have clearly spent years on their image, Milk Bottle simply wants to do its job well.

It may not be the most glamorous, but it is respected for a long career defined by the unassuming strength of its performances. It keeps coming back, and it keeps doing the job well.

Then there's Clear Plastic Bottle.

Whether it poses in not very much at all or in a spectacularly elaborate, skin-tight coat that appears to have been designed by a marketing department left unsupervised with an unlimited budget, it remains highly desirable. The outfit gets the photograph, but the substance underneath gets remembered.

Three different items. Three great careers. Each one given the respect and opportunity it deserves to continue performing.

You all love my longer posts, right? Well suit up: I'm taking a deep dive. Consider it your weekend reading.

♻ Every so often, someone tells me that I don't do enough ♻

That I don't provide enough concrete advice.

That I'm not helping by saying something is bad and the alternatives are less than perfect.

Honestly, I share the frustration.

The problem is that recycling is rather like being handed a map of a maze, only to discover someone is rearranging the walls while you're inside it.

People understandably want simple answers:

"Just tell me what to buy."

"Tell me what's good and what's bad."

"Tell me which packaging wins."

I'd love to. I really would.

It would make my job considerably easier if every item in every shop came with a giant label saying either:

✅ Excellent choice. Recycles perfectly everywhere and you've just saved the planet.

or

❌ Evil packaging. Buy this and you're going straight to eco-prison.

Much to my own personal displeasure, things have declined to organise themselves so neatly.

Take cartons, as I wrote about yesterday.

They're lightweight. They can reduce food waste. They can have practical storage benefits and save on refrigeration. They're also made of multiple materials bonded together, which can make them challenging to recycle.

Are they good? Are they bad?

The answer, infuriatingly, is just as it seems always to be: it depends.

I realise this is less satisfying than receiving a divine recycling flowchart engraved on stone tablets and delivered by a prophet in hi-vis, but it's the truth.

This page isn't about issuing decrees. It's about helping residents make informed decisions in a system where the answer is often "Yes, but also no, depending on several irritating factors."

Which is when I get:

♻ "Why don't you just lobby manufacturers to change it?" ♻

Local authorities are many things: waste collectors, service providers, public educators, and keepers of endless spreadsheets.

When it comes to changing packaging, however, we have about as much influence on our own as a health and safety officer attempting to divert an incoming comet using a traffic cone.

That doesn't mean nobody is pushing for change.

Councils work through professional bodies, industry groups, partnerships, consultations and national organisations precisely because large-scale change requires large-scale influence.

You can't throw a council-branded pen at a tanker and expect it to change course. Besides, our stationery budgets are as limited as any other these days.

So when I provide information, it isn't because I'm preaching in the wrong direction. It's because I know where I can make a meaningful difference: helping people make informed choices themselves.

In any case, information is not preaching. But I get why people can feel...

♻ "It's all so discouraging." ♻

Because I feel it, too, sometimes. But I have a duty to help people feel more confident in their understanding of how things work – or don't work. And I'm not telling anyone off for trying.

Explaining recycling realities could feel even to me like I'm lecturing, which is why I always try to do it with humour and humility. (Nobody is more humble than me, he says modestly.)

I don't know all the answers. I just want to help people ask the right questions.

Of course, there are things I know that people who don't work in my world might not – such as the true meaning of certain symbols.

Nobody enjoys discovering that a symbol they've trusted for years doesn't actually mean what they thought it meant. But explaining that isn't the same as standing on a soapbox.

If I explain that the Green Dot symbol (those two interconnecting arrows in a circle) doesn't actually mean an item can be recycled, I'm not scolding anyone. I'm simply correcting a widespread misconception.

I'm not telling anyone they're a bad recycler. Nobody is being shamed.

I'm just trying to navigate people through a system that resembles an escape room designed by bureaucrats, where every clue begins with the words "check with your local council."

Yes, it can be discouraging to discover you've been trying your best and the system still has you beaten at every turn. But the aim isn't perfection – it's greater understanding.

♻ The Great Recycling Conspiracy ♻

The truth is, the recycling system can be discouraging for everyone.

In our MRF, we'd have every right to be discouraged when we see perfectly recyclable material spoiled by contamination because packaging labels, national guidance and local collection systems don't always align.

But we know most people mean well.

Nobody wakes up in the morning and thinks, "Today I shall undermine material quality with a pet food pouch in the green bin!"

Most contamination comes from uncertainty, not malice – which is why reducing uncertainty matters.

Unfortunately, there are still people who confidently declare: "What's the point? It all gets buried or burned anyway."

For recycling officers, hearing this is a bit like a librarian being told literacy is a myth.

The claim is often repeated with remarkable confidence by people whose source appears to be a comment they saw underneath a video about seagulls.

Meanwhile, we put enormous effort into collecting, sorting and processing materials properly.

Our MRF separates materials suitable for reprocessing. Our teams work constantly to reduce contamination. We work hard to ensure material enters legitimate recycling streams.

We take our legal responsibilities seriously. More importantly, we take our moral responsibilities seriously.

That's why it can be frustrating to hear sweeping claims that all recycling is a sham when so many people, including residents, are working hard to do the right thing.

♻ The "Shocking Truth" About Recycling ♻

Perhaps most frustrating of all is when a major environmental group arrives with a campaign bearing its latest "shocking revelation" about recycling.

The implication is usually that society has been living through a vast waste-management conspiracy and must finally wake up.

To be fair, these stories often contain important truths.

Sometimes recycling systems fail. Sometimes materials are difficult to process. Sometimes infrastructure isn't good enough. As an industry, improvements have been made – but more needs to be done.

These are genuine issues deserving serious discussion. But it can be frustrating when complex national and international problems are presented as though every district council, every facility and every recycling programme is equally guilty.

That's rather like discovering that one restaurant served an overcooked roast and concluding that restaurants have failed as a concept.

The reality is messier. Every part of the chain has a responsibility to do what they can, and most do.

But some systems perform better than others. Some facilities achieve better outcomes than others. Access to national and international markets shift. Councils and residents alike generally care much more than they're given credit for. And the measurements the industry uses to define success are not always perfect.

It is frustratingly complex and inconsistent. But I doubt there's a council recycling team in the land that doesn't care deeply about what happens to their material.

We in Exeter focus on quality and circularity.

One advantage of owning our own MRF is that we can produce high-quality material that the recycling industry actively wants because it has the best chance of becoming something useful again.

The downside is that when unsuitable items arrive mixed in with co-mingled recycling, we don't discover them until they've already arrived at the facility.

That's the trade-off.

♻ The Unsatisfying Conclusion ♻

If you've read this far hoping for a simple answer that solves every packaging dilemma forever, I'm afraid I must disappoint you – like Arthur discovering there is no sword in the stone, only a leaflet about the environmental impacts of sword production.

The UK's recycling system is complicated.

Packaging choices involve trade-offs.

Infrastructure varies.

Labels can be confusing.

So, when I provide information instead of absolute instructions, I'm not being evasive, obstructive or preachy. I'm simply acknowledging reality when I say:

"Here's what I know, here's why it's complicated, and here's how I think you can make the best decision."

That may not be as satisfying as being told exactly what to do, but it's the honest answer when the UK's recycling system resembles what would happen if several committees designed a maze via Zoom and swapped notes halfway through.

Councils everywhere now have to collect cartons at the kerbside, including Exeter.

This has been greeted in some quarters as a great victory for common sense.

But as we all know, "common sense" is as big a myth as the idea that recycling cartons is straightforward.

Do you know how many councils in England are now required to collect cartons?

Three-hundred and twenty-one.

Do you know how many specialist carton recycling facilities there are in the UK?

One.

What do common sense and UK carton recycling infrastructure have in common? Neither exists to the extent people imagine.

Collecting cartons is easy. That's the part most people advocating “common sense” are talking about.

The difficult bit is everything afterwards.

We've never been especially enthusiastic about cartons. Not because they're evil, but because they're worth less than it costs to sort them and about as easy to recycle as a laminated haystack in a locked filing cabinet.

To be fair, they have plenty going for them. They're lightweight, reduce food waste, help products last longer and often contain environmentally preferable products like plant milks whose eco-credentials far outweigh any packaging difficulties.

But what looks like cardboard is actually paper, plastic and aluminium pressed together like a toasted cheese and ham panini with the specific aim of not falling apart. Brilliant for storing oat milk. Less brilliant when you're trying to turn it into something else.

People see the word "recyclable" and imagine a neat circular economy where old cartons become new products and everyone saves the world with their trolley.

Reality is less romantic. Councils collect them, sorting facilities separate them (we do this bit ourselves), a specialist processor recovers the useful bits, and everybody hopes there's somewhere for the leftovers to go.

The thing is, expanding collections doesn't automatically expand recycling infrastructure.

So while some might see this as a triumph for recyclers everywhere, it's really another challenge for local authorities.

Collecting cartons was never the hard part.

But collection and recycling are two different things.

That's just common sense.

Do coffee pods deserve a better rep? Or are they really what happens when artisan coffee culture meets planned obsolescence?

Coffee pods are one of the most successful examples of modern marketing. Not simply because they promise convenience – not really. Convenience existed before. People had kettles and cafetières, or percolators. People had perfectly functional ways of making coffee.

It’s because they sell something much more attractive: the promise of artisan coffee at home.

Luxury, without effort.

The idea that, at the press of a button, you can recreate the sort of coffee that previously could have been produced only by somebody with an espresso machine worth more than your car and an endearing interest in nano-gram scales and water temperature.

And it worked.

At least, the marketing did. The coffee? That's a matter of taste....

Millions of pod machines now sit on kitchen worktops across the country. Unfortunately, these go through millions of disposable pods – which is where things start getting awkward.

Because coffee pods are complicated little things. They contain multiple materials, coffee residues, filters and seals – and in Exeter they definitely shouldn't go in your green bin.

Instead, they need to go through dedicated schemes such as Podback, where the materials and coffee grounds can be separated and processed properly (podback.org). Podback no longer facilitates kerbside collections, but offers collection points in many locations. You can take them to recycling centres in Exeter, now – or you can use your pod manufacturer’s own take-back scheme.

But whether you're pro-pod or anti-pod, focusing solely on the that little capsule is a bit like buying a yacht and worrying only about the environmental impact of the sail. The pod is only part of the story.

Does creating an entire system of specialised machines, individually packaged servings and dedicated recycling networks make sense compared with simply using a cafetière, French press, or percolator?

Is it really that straightforward?

No.

The reality, as usual, is more complicated than fourteen people trying to clear a printer blockage at the same time.

A French press is essentially a glass jug with a metal filter attached. You use the kettle to fill it.

A pod machine contains more components than the Artemis moon launch – plastics, electronics, metals, heating elements, pumps, and circuit boards – and most will also sit alongside a kettle on the kitchen surface.

So far, so obvious. Right?

Not quite. Pods do have an upside – and it's not a bad one.

Precision.

A pod contains exactly the amount of coffee intended for that cup. The machine uses exactly the amount of water required and heats it to exactly the right temperature – usually lower than boiling point.

There is no guesswork. No accidentally brewing yourself enough coffee to supply a village fête. No half-full cafetière sitting on the kitchen side until lunchtime before being poured down the sink.

And this matters, because the largest environmental impact of coffee generally isn't the packaging – it's the coffee.

Producing a single cup of coffee requires roughly 130 to 140 litres of water, once you account for growing, processing and transporting the beans.

As people like to say nowadays: let that sink in. A single cup. Perhaps 14 grams of coffee in 300ml of water. And a legacy of 140 litres of water to bring that beverage into existence.

It makes you realise that wasting coffee is, indeed, very costly.

Growing it, processing it, shipping it across the world, roasting it, packaging it and brewing it only for half of it to end up down a drain – not exactly a triumph of sustainability.

In that respect, pods do have a genuine advantage. They are excellent at producing exactly one cup – no more, no less.

But does that advantage outweigh everything else? I mean, we haven't even discussed taste yet.

Of course, taste is subjective. Some people – get this – some people even enjoy instant coffee. Others will order decaf espresso, which feels simultaneously rational and spiritually confusing. Humanity is a broad church.

But let's be honest: nobody bought a pod machine because they were chasing the absolute pinnacle of coffee. They bought one because it offered a shortcut to something that felt a bit like premium coffee.

The promise was artisan coffee without the effort. The result – to me, at least – feels like a remarkable amount of engineering devoted to producing coffee broadly comparable to bean-adjacent hot water.

A good French press or percolator generally produces a fuller-bodied coffee, allowing more oils and flavour compounds from the beans to reach the cup. Pod systems prioritise consistency and speed.

And while that consistency is impressive, the flavour might be described as being consistently average.

But this isn’t a coffee page – it’s a waste and recycling page. So, what is the best approach overall, from that perspective?

Annoyingly, there isn't a perfect answer.

If your priority is convenience, pods are extremely difficult to beat. If you’re still worried about waste, you can buy reusable pods and fill them yourself – though these tend to be less consistent than disposable pods.

If your priority is flavour, freshly brewed coffee from a French press, percolator or similar method probably wins.

If your priority is avoiding unnecessary packaging, the old-fashioned methods have a very clear advantage.

If your priority is avoiding wasted coffee, pods score surprisingly well.

Coffee pods aren’t environmental heroes, but nor are they complete environmental villains.

They're a compromise. You get convenience. You get consistency. You get extra packaging and more complicated disposal and recycling. You get an electrical appliance designed specifically to perform a task that a glass jug has managed for decades. You get less wasted water and coffee. You get less wasted energy boiling too much water in a kettle. You probably still own a kettle, so now you have the footprint of both electronic devices in your life.

If you prefer full-flavoured coffee and the mindful experience of brewing it, use an old-fashioned method. Use precise measures of coffee and water to avoid wasting coffee, water and energy.

If you want convenience without suffering instant coffee, and don’t mind coffee that tastes like it came from a business-class lounge vending machine, keep using your pod machine. Either use reusable pods or make sure you know how to recycle the disposable ones – and don't put them in your green bin.

Just remember this: how you make your coffee is only the most visible part of the story.

We all know that, given enough time, old cables will knot themselves into shapes previously unknown to mathematics.

While you CAN’T put them in your green bin, they are nevertheless more valuable in recycling terms than the early apple-stained notebooks of Sir Isaac Newton.

They need to be taken to a shop that takes back old electrical items, or to a recycling centre. See recycleyourelectricals.org.uk for collection points near you.

Please don't just bin them - there was significant environmental and human cost to extracting their raw materials from the ground. But also don't leave them until they resemble a failed attempt by an octopus to knit itself a set of trousers.

I'm away next week, so here are some valuable recycling tips from recent questions and issues to keep you going until I return.

📦 Cardboard

Please flatten cardboard and leave it beside your recycling bin.

An un-flattened cardboard box occupies available space in the bin with the same enthusiasm as a king-size duvet in a suitcase.

As for protecting it from the rain, the climate appears to have decided we're done with that now. I would have said, “Open out a bin sack and put it over the cardboard,” but there hardly seems point.

🍞 Food waste

Please remember to bag your food waste before putting it in your caddy.

Any bag will do. Bread bags are particularly good.

The bags are removed later, and they help prevent your food waste from reacting with all the self-containment of a Labrador emerging from a river when the crew tips it into their transfer bin.

🔋 Batteries

Batteries should be taken back to a shop for recycling.

They have an unfortunate habit of bursting into flames when thrown in the bin – and bins have an unfortunate habit of containing highly flammable material. Trucks and waste depots have an unfortunate habit of being very costly to repair, and our staff have the entirely understandable habit of wanting to remain safe.

🧸 Soft toys

Soft toys can't be recycled from home.

If they're in good condition, donate them to a charity shop.

Besides, the last thing a recycling plant needs is a group of teddy bears organising picnics. Think of the contamination.

🧺 Plastic laundry baskets, storage boxes, and other similar bulky household plastic items

These belong in the bulky plastics skip at the recycling centre.

Not all plastic can be recycled from home, and some items are too bulky. A laundry basket is furniture. Not the kind of furniture you’d invite the neighbours round to admire, but furniture enough to require a different route.

🍳 Saucepans

Old saucepans, frying pans, and other metal kitchen utensils belong in the scrap metal skip at the recycling centre.

A saucepan isn’t packaging in the same way that a wheelie bin isn’t a bike just because it has two wheels.

🥣 Food residues

A smear of yoghurt is residue. You’ve finished your yoghurt. Your pot can go in your recycling bin.

Half a yoghurt is still pudding. You need to finish your yoghurt before offering (or delegating) it to us.

👕 Clothes

We aren't set up to recycle textiles through your recycling bin.

Wearable clothes should go to a charity shop or clothes bank.

Unwearable clothes can become cleaning rags, decorating cloths, workshop rags, or any number of other useful things.

By “unwearable” I don’t mean “unfashionable” or “hideous”.

🦑 Hosepipes

Old hosepipes should be taken to the recycling centre.

Not only are they not recyclable with packaging, but freeing a hosepipe from recycling machinery is a bit like fishing out a length of tinsel from a vacuum cleaner. Or a giant squid from a Victorian printing press.

🙏🙏Finally, thank you to everyone who makes the effort to recycle.

I know it's often about as straightforward as programming an old VCR while somebody reads the instructions from an entirely different make of VCR, but it genuinely does make a difference, and it's appreciated.

I hope you all enjoyed yesterday's eclipse and managed to save yourself a small fortune by ordering your glasses before they started trading like Oasis tickets.

Anyone who did end up taking out a second mortgage for a last-minute pair of eclipse specs will be pleased to know they can't really be recycled. Keep hold of them until the next eclipse in 2081, when they'll probably be worth more than the sun itself and whatever mark-up you paid will seem like a bargain.

The lenses definitely can't be recycled.

The frames are usually laminated with plastic film, so they can't be recycled either. Presumably this was a thoughtful attempt by environmentally conscious manufacturers to help them survive another 55 years. If they were littered after the event, they probably will.
