TOWN CENTRE UPDATE

East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee will meet again on 15th December 2020 to discuss a revised proposal regarding the town centre. This is a very important meeting for Cranbrook. Over 80% of residents want to see delivery of a town centre sooner rather than later or not at all and therefore you may wish to show your support by writing to the Committee.

Please go to our dedicated website page for the contact details of the Committee and a suggested letter of support should you wish to write.

TOWN CENTRE DEVELOPMENT – THERE’S HOPE!

We have been very quiet in our communications about the town centre development since East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee on 22 October 2020.

The developer consortium, the East Devon New Community partners, and East Devon District Council have been continuing to discuss and negotiate the developers’ town centre proposal.

The Strategic Planning Committee is scheduled to consider an enhanced proposal at their next meeting on 15 December 2020 at 2:00pm. Once the agenda and supporting documents for that meeting have been published we will inform you all – watch this space!

TOWN CENTRE DECISION

The meeting of East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee concluded this afternoon and that Committee voted for the development of a supplementary planning document for the town centre as per the planning officers’ recommendations and it rejected the developers’ offer.

We at the Town Council are extremely disappointed that the town centre in Cranbrook will now not be delivered in the near future.

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE UPDATE

Further to our recent posts, East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee is now re-scheduled to meet on Thursday, 22 October 2020 at 2:00 pm to decide between two options for the town centre development in Cranbrook. The agenda and supporting documents will be published a week before the meeting at https://democracy.eastdevon.gov.uk/ieListMeetings.aspx?CommitteeId=154.

One proposal by the consortium of developers, the East Devon New Community Partners, would see the delivery of the town centre in the near future.

The other proposal by East Devon District Council planning officers would see the development of a supplementary planning document or masterplan for the town centre.

If you haven’t already voted in our poll at https://poll.app.do/development-of-cranbrook-town-centre please do so before the meeting on 22 October 2020. On that page we also published some more details about the two proposals. Thank you.

TOWN CENTRE LATEST

Today we have received a notification from East Devon District Council that they have cancelled the meeting of the Strategic Planning Committee on 23 September 2020 at which the future of the town centre in Cranbrook would have been decided.

We have been advised that East Devon District Council will “advise regarding the new date as soon as possible” and we will, of course, keep you all posted.

TOWN CENTRE UPDATE

On Wednesday, 23 September 2020, East Devon District Council’s Strategic Planning Committee will decide on the future of the town centre in Cranbrook.

Sadly, East Devon planning officers are recommending to that Committee the development of a masterplan (“Supplementary Planning Document” or SPD), which is directly opposed to what the Town Council has been negotiating for on behalf of the Cranbrook community. We believe that there is no clarity over what can be delivered via an SPD, whether it can be funded and how long it’s going to take to deliver. We believe that the developers’ proposal should be supported which would deliver a town centre within the next two years. 81% of respondents to our poll at https://poll.app.do/development-of-cranbrook-town-centre share our opinion.

All the documents, including the officers’ report, is available at:

https://democracy.eastdevon.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=154&MId=1515&Ver=4

The Strategic Planning Committee will meet in public and any member of the public is entitled to attend and speak at the meeting.

If you feel strongly that Cranbrook needs a town centre and it needs it now, please help us by either attending the meeting and speaking in support of a timely delivery of the town centre or write to the Committee members.

We published relating information including a poll at https://poll.app.do/development-of-cranbrook-town-centre. If you haven’t already completed the poll, please may we invite you again to do so.

TOWN CENTRE UPDATE

Before the consortium of developers (Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and Hallam Land Management) can submit a planning application for the development of the town centre in Cranbrook, they need to evidence community engagement and the level of support for their proposals. Therefore they have launched a dedicated website with an online exhibition and questionnaire for residents to communicate their preferences at www.cranbrooktowncentre.com. Normally consultation would take the form of a display and drop-in event locally but, because of current restrictions, this is not possible.

This consultation is in addition to the survey which the Town Council has been carrying out recently to evidence to the local planning authority East Devon District Council whether or not residents prefer the delivery of the consortiums proposals for the town centre in the near future or East Devon District Council’s proposals to prepare a supplementary planning document and masterplan for possible development over a much longer period of time.

This consultation describes a comprehensive set of proposals for Cranbrook Town centre – as proposed by the East Devon New Community partners along with specialist Town Centre developers HDD Developments.
