SAFEGUARDING IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY: The Parish Council (acting as the sole trustee of the Randolph Social Welfare Centre charity) is firmly committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for children to enjoy playing sport by putting in place the best-possible practices and procedures. When clubs apply to hire the sports pavilion facilities at the recreation ground in future, they will be asked for additional information as part of the process. Anyone aged 16 years or over in a regulated or influential role (coach, manager, medic, club welfare officer, committee member), who undertakes any potentially unsupervised roles working directly with children and young adults under the age of 18 must hold an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check with a Children’s Barred List check, issued within the last three years. Sport can have a powerful positive influence on children but that means everyone involved must take on the responsibility of looking after those children, young people, and adults at risk who want to play in a safe, fun, and positive environment free from abuse or harm.

A PERIODIC INSPECTION around the allotment sites was conducted recently and several plots are not being kept in a clean, decent, and good condition, violating the tenancy agreement, including fly tipping and dumping of waste in the allotments. When this occurs, local councils are responsible for enforcing site rules and formal notices are being issued to address these issues of non-compliance. The Parish Council needs to balance the benefits of providing allotments to those who request them against the cost to local council tax payers, who subsidise the allotments. This may in future include using a refundable deposit scheme to pay for clearing an out-going tenant's waste and rubbish from the allotment, whereby the cost of removal will be charged to them based on what type of waste has been left behind; as well as using a more robust vetting process to focus on verifying an applicant's eligibility (actually living within the parish) and their ability to look after the plot.

THE PARISH COUNCIL (acting as the sole trustee of the Randolph Social Welfare Centre charity) is looking at making some improvements at the sports pavilion building at the Welfare Ground to make the facilities more accessible and to enhance the experience for the local community, players, officials, coaches, and supporters. It is intended to apply for grant-aid funding from Durham County Council's Local Network Fund. Top of the list of priorities that would make the biggest difference at present are alterations to the toilet; improving the kitchen; installing hard-wearing carpet and matting; new tables and chairs; and painting and decorating. Evenwood Cricket Club has already installed a new worktop counter at the club's own expense, which looks great. The Welfare Ground matters a great deal to the community and this project will help to secure its future for future generations to use.

SUMMER FÊTE 2027: The Parish Council has started planning in advance to ensure an enjoyable community event next year. We are looking for a range of different stallholders and activities for our summer fête on Saturday 24th July 2027 at the recreation ground in Evenwood, such as local craft stalls; family-orientated entertainment; food stalls; music; and children's sporting competitions. THE PARISH COUNCIL shares residents' concerns about road safety and parish councillors have agreed to start a Community Speedwatch (CSW) initiative, an effective way of addressing concerns about speeding within local communities, where local volunteers - trained by the police - use radar devices and portable cameras either independently or in partnership with police community support officers (PCSOs) to monitor and record vehicle speeds in areas of concern or a specific speeding hotspot, and raise awareness of road safety issues. Natalie Miller, Community Support Officer at Durham Police, has asked whether there are any residents who are interested in taking part in the Evenwood Speedwatch. "Everyone is welcome!" THE COMMUNITY DEFIBRILLATOR which was installed at the sports pavilion within the Recreation Ground at Stones End in Evenwood was reported as deployed by the ambulance service and is currently still marked as 'not available' because someone has used it and not put it back in its normal location. North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) has instigated an investigation; contacted the 999 caller who said it was at the patient’s house; and information was received confirming that the patient's wife would return the defibrillator. NEAS have called two additional numbers several times and left voicemails and texts without success. If anyone has any information about the defibrillator's whereabouts, please get in touch to help ensure it can carry out its lifesaving work, otherwise Durham Police may be asked to assist in its return.

NOTICE OF PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The next monthly meeting of Evenwood and Barony Parish Council will be held in the Cornerstone Christian Centre, Swan Street, Evenwood, DL14 9RN, on Tuesday 13th October 2026, commencing at 7:00 p.m. The agenda setting out the business to be transacted will be displayed on the main notice boards in Evenwood (Manor Street) and at Evenwood Gate, at least three days before the meeting. There are no meetings in August during Summer recess.
