National Garden Scheme Essex Beautiful private gardens in Essex which open to raise money for the National Gardens Scheme From mid February through to late November there are gardens open.

Across Essex are some beautiful, privately owned gardens whose owners throw open the garden gate to welcome members of the public for a small fee. this money, together with money raised from the sale of refreshments, plants and other items goes to support caring charities. The main four charities supported are : Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK and the Carers Trust. La

rge gardens, small gardens, formal gardens, exotic gardens, wildlife gardens, gardens with stunning views. Simply something for everyone, all with great ideas for your to copy and with very knowledgeable owners only too keen to pass on advice. Oh and also wonderful home made cakes and cups of tea! Several also open by appointment for groups and some offer lunches too. To boost our income Essex NGS also offer a talk about the scheme and our wonderful gardens for groups such as the W.I. U3A and Horticultural groups. In 2022 we were delighted to raise over £161,000.

Why not mark Father’s Day with a visit to Chippins garden which is opening for Essex NGS on Sunday 21st June. It’s an artists’ and plantaholics’ paradise packed with interest. An explosion of colour with daylilies, rambling roses, salvias, canna and dahlias. Studio and etching press in conservatory with paintings on show.

A cottage style garden of a grade two listed 1930’s home.
Greeted by a mature wisteria the rear garden has a lawn flanked by perennial borders with viburnum arch leading to an attractive pond with Monet style bridge, pebbled beach area and a mature Indian Bean tree. A wildlife pond and bog garden was created in 2022 in the woodland area.
After recently discovering some old steps leading down to the diverted River Roach, a new woodland area was opened in 2024.

Make the most of two beautiful gardens in Billericay which are opening for Essex NGS on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June and are offering joint admission.
1 Brook Cottage has traditional cottage front and back gardens plus 3.5 acres of meadow and woodland.
Ivy Cottage is again a cottage garden with a mixture of herbaceous, annual and climbing plants in a garden of over 1.5 acres.
Both gardens are particularly attractive for landscaper/nature artists (easels welcome) and picnics.

Next Thursday 18 June why not join a special evening opening at Audley End House and Gardens when the Head Gardener and her team will be giving a private tour of the gardens including the 1832 Parterre and the amazing walled kitchen garden.
The tour runs from 5.30 to 7.30pm when the gardens are closed to the public. Admission for adults £20, children free.
