🤔Did you know that on this day (6th September) in 1620 ,149 Pilgrims, The Pilgrim Fathers, finally set sail from Plymouth in the Mayflower bound for America - the New World. The Pilgrims' story of people seeking to escape the religious controversies and economic problems of their time by emigrating to America, has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States.
Did you also know that two of their most important leaders, William Brewster, born around 1566 at nearby Scrooby, and William Bradford, born in 1590 at Austerfield, were neighbours who became leading figures of the Separatist congregation that eventually sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. Scrooby is only about 17 miles from Epworth, placing it at the heart of the early Pilgrim movement.

🎼Samuel Sebastian Wesley - the grandson of Charles🎹
Today Lois, our Outreach Learning and Engagement manager learnt something new on her visit to Gloucester Cathedral, when she spotted this blue plaque.

But, did you know that Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810–1876) was the grandson of Charles Wesley, the famous hymn writer and one of the founders of Methodism?

Samuel became one of the most important English church composers and organists of the 19th century. He was a child musical prodigy and went on to hold prestigious organist posts at Hereford Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, Leeds Parish Church and Gloucester Cathedral.

His music is still performed today, particularly his anthems such as Blessed be the God and Father and Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace.

We love it that we, and our Learning Manager keep on learning!! 🤔

🍎We are seeking heritage crafters 🧺 to make and sell traditional handmade items on our Apple Day on Saturday 24th October at Epworth Old Rectory.
Places are free and limited for craftspeople able to demonstrate their crafting skills on the day or offer have a go sessions. Crafters may also sell their own items if they are handmade. Please contact Sarah Maltby on [email protected] further details

On Saturday October 24th Epworth Old Rectory are hosting a traditional autumn celebration to round off the season.
Includes apple pressing (bring a container to take home your juice!); soap ball making; willow weaving; heritage cookery in the kitchen; spinning, weaving and dying wool; make herbal cure bag; games in the garden; plus folk music throughout the day; and lots more besides....!

🐏Our new Autumn Home Learning Sessions are now open to book.🪵
This season we have some exciting adventures with a range of traditional materials to explore from carding, drop spinning and natural dying heritage breed wool, to creating a hand carved plaque with an expert wood carver. We even have a session for young people to have a go willow weaving to make a Christmas Wreath.
All sessions are designed for young people learning at home and provide suitably calm, supportive and safe spaces for children with SEND.
