From the elegant surroundings of Florence Court to the historic heart of Enniskillen Castle and the unique setting of Castle Island, the Enniskillen Island Town Plein Air Painting Weekend returns from 18-20 September for its fourth year.

Whether you're an experienced artist, a student, an arts educator or picking up a paintbrush for the very first time, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore, experience and celebrate Fermanagh through art.

Dr Padraig McGarty will give a talk on ‘The Forgotten Peterhead Men’ on Saturday, 19 September at 6.30pm. Dr McGarty is the author of the book ‘Leitrim: The Irish Revolution, 1912-23’, Four Courts Press, 2020. The talk is free but places are limited.

Discover the story behind The Peterhead Men.

As part of the closing events for The Peterhead Men exhibition, historian and author Dr Padraig McGarty will present a free public talk exploring this little-known episode.

Drawing on his research, Dr McGarty will examine the experiences of the prisoners transferred to Peterhead Prison in Scotland following events on the border in 1922, and the significance of their story within the wider history of the decade.

A little-known chapter of local and Irish history comes to Enniskillen Castle for SEVEN DAYS, this September.

"The Peterhead Men" is a touring exhibition that explores the events surrounding the turbulent period following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921.

In early 1922, a number of Irish republican prisoners were arrested following a border raid in Enniskillen and later transferred to Peterhead Prison in Scotland. Through photographs, research and historical interpretation, the exhibition examines the political instability of the time, the conditions within Peterhead Prison and the eventual release of the prisoners in January 1926.

Several of the men had connections to County Fermanagh.

Beneath Drumclay Crannog, in the mud, archaeologists discovered a young dog. Knee-high. Remarkably well preserved.

How did it get there?

Was it placed deliberately - an offering before the crannog was built? Or did it become trapped in the marshy ground, its remains sealed beneath the timbers for centuries?

Science can tell us when the dog lived, how old it was and how big it was.

But it can't tell us why.

How much do we really know about Ireland's distant past?

Our understanding of the past is constantly evolving as new archaeological discoveries and scientific techniques shed fresh light on old mysteries.

For decades, the famous "Kerry Cow" was believed to represent the earliest evidence of cattle in Ireland. However, new scientific testing of the remains, which date to the Mesolithic period before farming arrived in Ireland, has revealed a surprising twist: the bones did not belong to a cow at all. Instead, they have been identified as those of a bear and a boar.

It's a fascinating reminder that our understanding of Ireland's prehistory is never truly finished, and that each new discovery can change what we thought we knew about the past.
