In the coming weeks, the Government is expected to announce what local councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will look like in future.

Our area is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) – the process by which the seven current county, district, city and unitary councils are replaced with a smaller number of new ‘unitary councils’. These will be responsible for providing all the council services you access from April 2028.

Whatever the Government decides, your services will continue as normal. Local councils remain fully operational and committed to supporting communities - especially those who need us most.

The Government is expected to confirm which new councils will be created in July 2026. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Local councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are changing.

Our area is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), the Government’s national programme to simplify how councils are structured in England.

It means from April 2028, the seven current county, district, city and unitary councils in our area will be replaced by a smaller number of new ‘unitary councils’ responsible for providing all the council services you access.

The Government is expected to announce which new councils will be created in July 2026. Whatever the decision, existing councils are working together to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible and ensure your services continue as normal without disruption.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.
