Our East Cambridgeshire PCSOs were out and about over the weekend, visiting the Annual Feast in Little Thetford and a community event at Highfield School in Ely.

It was lovely to meet so many residents, young and old—engaging with our communities is a key part of what we do, helping us listen, support and keep people safe.

An elderly lady – let’s call her Dorothy – sits at home in her favourite spot on the sofa. She lives alone after losing her husband five years ago. Her family live an hour away, but she has a small group of loving friends and neighbours who she relies on for support.

She spends her days watching TV, the highlight of her week is seeing her friends at a local craft class on a Wednesday, followed by a trip to the supermarket to buy her weekly groceries.

Her mind isn’t as sharp as it once was and she’s not as steady on her feet, but she’s still able to recount tales from her youth in breathtaking detail.

We all know a Dorothy. Sadly, elderly and vulnerable people just like her are often the prime targets for fraudsters, particularly those involved in courier fraud, which is an ever-evolving crime.

Total losses from courier fraud reached a staggering £21 million last year with criminals using increasingly sophisticated and persistent tactics to scam their vulnerable victims.

"I have never been so impressed with the police – helpful, sympathetic, worked as a great team and found him quickly."

These were the kind words of an Ely resident who wrote to her local paper after officers found her husband, who has severe dementia, within 40 minutes of her first call.

The man has also been provided with a yellow Herbert Protocol wristband, joining 47 others who have received a wristband directly from officers - the protocol helps police if a loved one goes missing by collating key pieces of information, such as a physical description, familiar places, health details and an up-to-date photo

There is also an online form you can fill out to receive a band, that so far 507 families have taken advantage of.

For more info about the Herbert Protocol, or to fill out an online form for people who live in Cambridgeshire, visit our dedicated web page: https://orlo.uk/LcEih

Police are appealing for help to trace a prisoner who has absconded from HMP Hollesley Bay.

He has connections to Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and is serving an 11 year and eight months sentence for causing death by dangerous driving and attempted robbery.

Members of the public are advised not to approach him and should call police on 999 immediately if they see him, quoting crime reference 37/28856/26.

We are appealing for information following a serious single vehicle collision near Six Mile Bottom.

Emergency services were called to London Road, between Six Mile Bottom and Newmarket, at 12pm yesterday with reports a white Suzuki DL motorcycle had left the road.

The rider, a man in his 40s from Cambridge, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious injuries where he remains.

Anyone with information is asked to report online https://orlo.uk/TW4CD or call 101 and quote incident 192 of 7 June.

We are advising people to try and steer clear of Waterbeach for the next few hours due to an ongoing parade which has closed the town centre. there is no through route and traffic is being held. Highways are aware and are currently dealing with this ongoing issue.
