New Arc Wildlife Rescue is the largest wildlife rescue centre in the North-East of Scotland. We are an independent Charity (SC037332), based just outside of Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and we take in large numbers of orphaned or injured wildlife every year from all over the North-East of Scotland. Please note we are not open to the public for visits, as a wildlife rescue facility our wildlife casualties

are highly stressed, and need a calm and quiet environment. We are only open to receive wildlife casualties from the public.

Since we were established in 2006 we have rescued and rehabilitated over 16,000 animals and birds. We are an associate member of the British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, and work closely with local and national Government, as well as other stakeholders such as veterinary professionals.

New Arc Wildlife Rescue operates a 24/7, 365 days per year service for wildlife emergencies, and is also available within opening times for non-emergencies, general wildlife advice and non-critical admissions.

This little blackcap was fortunate to be spotted on a road in Mintlaw. Although it was moved to a safer location nearby, no parent birds returned to care for the chick. After careful consideration, the decision was made to bring it into care.

The young bird is feeding well, growing stronger every day, and it wonโ€™t be long before heโ€™s ready for a second chance in the wild where he belongs. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’š

Our fledgling birds are some of our most demanding patients! Although they're on the verge of feeding themselves, fledglings still rely on their parents to provide food while they learn this essential skill. For this rescued flock, that role falls to our dedicated volunteers, who work hard to ensure every hungry beak is fed.

The season is picking up fast, with 30 patients admitted today alone, a number we donโ€™t usually reach until late June. ๐Ÿ˜“

This little bullfinch is just one of the many baby birds currently in our care, all needing round-the-clock attention. Depending on their species, diet, and stage of development, some of our babies require feeding every 30 minutes throughout the day.

Weโ€™d also like to gently remind everyone that we do not have a dedicated reception team. The same people feeding, cleaning, and caring for these tiny patients are also answering your calls and admitting casualties, so we truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this incredibly busy time.

Right now, we are especially in need of waxworms to help keep our hungry birds growing strong. If youโ€™d like to support our work, please take a look at our Amazon wishlist below โค๏ธ

For a variety of different reasons, in person dog shows arenโ€™t suitable for many dogs and/or people.
An online dog show takes all those barriers away.

27/05/2026

We are starting to get calls for young gull chicks being found on the ground. If you do find one, or have any concerns please call us on 01358701723 so we can advise on whether to intervene or not.

Help us to ensure we have space for the sick, injured and genuinely orphaned gull chicks this summer by calling for advice prior to intervening.

Every year, large numbers of healthy young gulls are unnecessarily removed from the wild by well-meaning members of the public who are simply trying to help. We completely understand that instinct, seeing a young bird alone on the ground can be worrying โค๏ธ

In many cases though, their parents are usually nearby, continuing to feed, protect and watch over them. If a healthy gull chick is in immediate danger, such as beside a road, it is often best to simply move them a short distance to a safer nearby location such as a flat roof, sheltered area or secure garden, allowing the parents to continue caring for them naturally.

Once a healthy chick is taken away from its parents, it often has to be raised in captivity unnecessarily, placing additional pressure on already stretched wildlife rescue services during the busiest time of year.

Thatโ€™s why the British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council has teamed up with RSPCA (England & Wales) and Scottish SPCA to help promote clear, evidence-based guidance on when intervention is genuinely needed, helping protect gull welfare while ensuring rescue spaces remain available for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife that truly require care.

So when should you intervene?

โœ… If the chick is visibly injured, weak or unwell
โœ… If it has been caught by a cat or dog
โœ… If it is a very young nestling in immediate danger, such as near a road or exposed to other hazards

When should you leave them where they are?

โŒ If the bird is alert, mobile and otherwise healthy
โŒ If parents are not immediately visible, gulls may only return periodically to feed
โŒ If adults are swooping nearby, this is usually defensive parenting behaviour and a sign young birds are close

The kindest thing we can often do is observe from a distance and allow wild parents to continue doing what they do best. Please always call your nearest wildlife rescue centre for advice prior to intervening.

Did you know that New Arc Wildlife Rescue is a licensed Animal Welfare Establishment?

Animal Welfare Establishment Licensing is something that often happens quietly in the background, but it plays an incredibly important role in ensuring high standards of care for animals in captivity, including wildlife rescue centres such as New Arc Wildlife Rescue.

Scotland is currently the only devolved nation in the UK where animal welfare establishment licensing specifically includes wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centres. We believe this is an important and positive step for wildlife welfare and for maintaining professional standards within the sector.

For wildlife rehabilitation centres, licensing provides external oversight, accountability and reassurance that facilities, husbandry, veterinary care, record keeping, staffing and welfare standards are being maintained to a high level. It helps ensure that rescued wildlife receive appropriate care throughout their rehabilitation journey, from admission through to release.

While inspections and compliance requirements can be demanding, we believe this is ultimately a very positive thing. Good regulation helps protect animal welfare, supports professionalism within the sector and provides confidence to the public, supporters and partner organisations that centres are operating responsibly and transparently.

Wildlife rescue work is often carried out under significant pressure, with rising caseloads and limited resources, so having constructive relationships with regulators who understand the realities of animal welfare work is incredibly valuable.

We would like to say a sincere thank you to all of the team at Aberdeenshire Trading Standards, who oversee licensing within our region. Their professionalism, support and genuine passion for animal welfare is greatly appreciated, and we are grateful for the collaborative approach they bring to helping maintain high welfare standards for wildlife in care.
