Your hosts at the Coruisk Memorial Hut, the Glasgow JMCS, along with the other Sections of the JMCS will be celebrating their 100th birthday in August 2025. A major milestone that requires similarly major celebrations and commemorations. As well as the usual dinners and speeches it was felt that something more lasting would be appropriate. So, along with the other Sections of the Club (Edinburgh, Lochaber, London and Perth) we have decided to publish an Anthology of JMCS stories covering the formation of the Club up to the present day. This project is well under way and progressing well. We hope to have the book available by the end of 2024.
During some of the early research, we managed to contact the daughters of 2 of the founders of the Club. They have very generously shared some precious family heirlooms in the form of two fascinating diaries and 5 photo albums dating from the formation of the Club. These give an intriguing glimpse into the characters that were around in the early days of the Club and what they were doing in the 1920s. Next time you head up to Skye, think of them doing the same but travelling from Glasgow to Glenbrittle on bicycles, or heading up to Arrochar after work on a Saturday afternoon for a day's climbing on the Cobbler on Sunday before cycling back to Glasgow for work on Monday morning. Real hardcore! One of the grandchildren, Peter Jones (), is an artist specialising in portraits of buildings. When we first met, some plans were hatched to get Coruisk painted (not the usual whitewash for a nice change!).
After some false starts we have at last managed to get 2 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren into Coruisk over the Easter weekend. They had a fabulous time there, were blessed with fair weather with no midges and while there, Peter produced a unique painting of our hut. The main motivation for doing this was to use the image in the Anthology however we are now wondering if there might be an opportunity to use this image as a means of raising some much needed funds for the project. Peter has agreed that we can produce a limited edition print run of the painting. He has very generously offered to donate 50% of the profits to the Club to help fund the Anthology. We expect the price will be in the region of £65 plus p&p for a unique, high quality, unframed giclee print which will be individually signed by the artist. An image of the painting is attached. This is a rare and strictly limited opportunity to get a unique painting of our much treasured hut at Coruisk. The painting is 40cm x 30cm.
As followers of the Coruisk Memorial Hut page, many of whom will have enjoyed the peace, tranquillity and rugged beauty of Coruisk, we would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase a copy of this painting and in a small way help to get the JMCS Anthology onto the bookshelves. If you are interested in purchasing a copy please contact us using the encrypted WhatsApp link in this post with your name and email address. We will contact you with more information in due course.
