What if your old tech could do more good than you think? 💚

An old laptop in a cupboard.
A phone tucked away in a drawer.
A tablet you haven’t switched on in years.

For , we are asking you to look at old tech a little differently. Because when a device is no longer useful to you, that doesn’t mean it has reached the end of its life.

At Edinburgh Remakery, donated tech can be repaired, refurbished, reused or responsibly recovered, keeping valuable materials in circulation for longer and helping reduce e-waste. And a portion of refurbished devices go to support people facing digital exclusion.

So this Zero Waste Week, take one simple action:

- Dig out your old tech. Give it another chance. Keep it in circulation.

has just come into force in as part of the country’s new penal code! The new provision, which criminalises mass environmental destruction, was adopted by the Federal Parliament in February 2024 as part of a major criminal law reform.

Belgium’s ecocide law was adopted shortly before the ’s revised Environmental Crime Directive entered into force in May 2024. The Directive requires Member States to strengthen criminal penalties for serious environmental offences, including qualified offences covering particularly severe environmental damage that can be “comparable to ecocide”.

Patricia Willocq, Stop Ecocide International’s Diplomatic Director for Africa and Francophone Countries, said:

“This is a significant moment for Belgium and for the growing recognition of ecocide. Two years after its adoption, Belgium’s ecocide offence can now be applied in practice.”
