Saheliya Hub Saheliya Hub is part of the Open Arms Programme
working in partnership with ELREC, Linknet and Sikh Sanjog. Our services are free and confidential.

The Saheliya Hub tackles isolation and lonliness by offering a range of groups and classes so empowering and integrating BME women. Saheliya supports and promotes the positive mental health and well-being of black,
minority ethnic, asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women and girls (12+) in Edinburgh,
Glasgow and other parts of Scotland. We develop our service user’s self-esteem and
confidence and

reduce barriers such as isolation and depression, by using a holistic range
of services including counselling, practical support and advocacy, befriending,
complementary therapies, outreach, group work and Young Saheliya. Childcare for under-fives is available on request. Saheliya Learning Centre provides language, employability and personal finance skills
for women to compete in the Job Market. Childcare is available for women with children who want to access our courses. Around the World Childcare is a nursery and creche facility open to all while
supporting service users.

The Saheliya Hub has opened it's VIRTUAL doors for our new term's classes.
We are running Early Education and Childcare classes, English classes, Sewing, Computer, Yoga, Get Fit with Jog Scotland and a weekly 'Drop In for a Chat' group.

Toddlers are little people with big feelings – frustration is an emotion that you might see quite a lot during this stage!
They might cry or hit out when they can’t have or achieve something or they might find it difficult to wait for things or cope with changes e.g. leaving play to go out. Tantrums are a very ordinary response at this stage, to being unable to control what is happening in their world.

Naming feelings and helping your child to understand why they feel this way can support this learning. If your child is frustrated because they can’t manage to put on their own jacket – even though they really, really want to – you could say something like “your jacket is a bit tricky to put on – I can see you feel cross about that. If I hold it you will be able to do the rest all by yourself”

Playing with your little one can give them an opportunity to express feelings and practise managing them at a stage when they cannot say how they feel using words. You are a primary role model in your child’s world and when you respond to their frustration calmly and with understanding (most of the time! 😊) they will learn these skills too.

Being able to make choices gives children a sense of agency - that they have some control of, or ability to influence their world. These choices can be really simple everyday things such as having a choice of two fillings for their sandwich, or deciding if they would like to wear their red or green t-shirt.

We thought you'd all like to see more from our Saheliya Hub Gardening project. We've managed to pleat the garlic and are storing it for winter. The apple tree has got quite a few fruits developing on it. And the broad beans, planted with the help of children from Broughton Primary school, produced a good crop too.
