📰 On Wednesday, 3rd June, Consul General Katsutoshi Takeda visited the Port of Nigg in Tain, the Scottish Highlands.
The Port of Nigg is a premier renewable energy superhub in the Scottish Highlands, strategically designated as a Green Freeport to drive the UK’s transition to net-zero and bolster national energy security. Owned and operated by Maraen—a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui & Co. and MOL—this world-class deepwater facility has evolved from its oil and gas heritage into Europe's leading hub for large-scale offshore wind projects. Furthermore, the port’s global competitiveness is reinforced by Sumitomo Electric’s state-of-the-art subsea cable manufacturing plant on site, delivering high-skilled local jobs and establishing Nigg as a powerhouse of clean energy excellence.
On the day of the visit, Consul General Takeda first received a detailed briefing by Yoshinobu Hayakawa, CEO & Managing Director of Maraen on the Port of Nigg’s structural advantages, its status as a designated Green Freeport, and strategic roadmaps for future business expansion geared toward decarbonisation.
Following the briefing, the Consul General was given a tour of the port facilities and observed first-hand the massive marshalling and assembly operations for the Dogger Bank offshore wind project, one of the largest in the world. The guided tour also highlighted the progress of ongoing infrastructure enhancements at the Inner East Quay aimed at further expanding capacity, alongside the port's enduring capabilities in oil drilling rig repair, maintenance, and overhaul.
Witnessing these simultaneous operations provided a compelling, first-hand look at the very forefront of the energy transition, where the port high-dimensionally satisfies both traditional and new energy demands during this critical evolutionary phase from fossil fuels to clean energy.
