The Association of Indian Communists strongly condemns the politically motivated ED raids carried out in Kerala yesterday. These actions once again expose the BJP government’s dangerous misuse of central agencies to target opposition voices and spread fear among those who challenge its authoritarian agenda.

The Enforcement Directorate is increasingly being reduced to a political weapon rather than an independent investigative institution. Selective raids, intimidation, and media spectacles have become the BJP’s preferred tools to weaken democratic resistance across the country.

Kerala has a proud history of standing against communalism, fascism, and political oppression. The people of Kerala will not be silenced by intimidation tactics orchestrated from Delhi.

We demand an immediate end to the misuse of constitutional institutions for political revenge. Democracy cannot survive when investigative agencies are turned into instruments of ruling party propaganda and harassment.

Comrade Avtar Uppal (1 April 1943 – 19 May 2026)

The Association of Indian Communists (AIC) expresses its deepest grief and profound sorrow over the passing of our beloved leader, mentor, and dear friend, Comrade Avtar Uppal, who left us on 19 May 2026.

Comrade Avtar Uppal’s journey with our association spanned over half a century, marking an era of fierce resistance, ideological clarity, and unbreakable dedication to the working class. From his early days as a dynamic youth leader to his pivotal roles in the Indian Workers' Association (IWA), the Progressive Writers' Association (PWA), and the AIC, his footprint on the progressive movement was monumental. He was a stalwart on the frontlines of trade union struggles, a champion of race relations in the UK, and an uncompromising voice against imperialism. When the Party called upon him, he fearlessly stepped into the electoral arena, contesting for the Greater London Assembly.

Beyond his fierce militancy, Comrade Avtar Uppal was a truly cultured comrade—a rare, multi-faceted intellect. He was a dedicated historian, a lifelong student of philosophy, an avid reader, and an accomplished writer. His revolutionary spirit was beautifully balanced by his artistic soul as a composer and classical singer.

He wholeheartedly embraced Marxism-Leninism, living by its core values every single day. He held an immense pride in the concept of "added value" and fiercely championed the dignity of labour. Yet, for all his grand achievements and fearless nature, he remained remarkably gentle, humble, and boundlessly generous to everyone around him.

We have lost a titan of a bygone era, a brilliant mind, and a beautiful human being. The AIC lowers its red flag in solemn honor of Comrade Avtar Uppal. We extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to his family, comrades, and the countless lives he touched.

Lal Salaam to Comrade Avtar Uppal!
The struggle continues. Inquilab Zindabad ✊🏾

Workers of the World, Unite! May Day 2026

The past few months have exposed a harrowing landscape of exploitation and corporate overreach across India. From the industrial belts of Panipat and Noida to the tech parks of Karnataka, the cry for dignity is louder than ever. In our oil refineries, workers report slave-like conditions and brutal enforcement by private security forces, while workplace fatalities are frequently covered up - bodies reportedly removed in trucks, unrecorded and stripped of their humanity. This domestic crisis is compounded by the brave tribal protests resisting the seizure of ancestral lands and the economic instability of the USA–Iran conflict, which has devastated our unorganized sector.

The struggle is being met with systemic hostility. The introduction of the new Labour Code represents a direct assault on the working class, designed to dismantle the protections won through decades of sacrifice. While the media seeks to criminalize protesters and silence their stories, we remember the power of our collective voice seen during the previous strike. This May Day, the Association of Indian Communists stands in absolute solidarity with every worker. We call upon you to organize, join unions, and defend the fundamental rights that the state and capital are so desperate to erase.

In Solidarity,
Association of Indian Communists (AIC)

The AIC EC expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of Jasvir Kaur Mann, beloved mother of Com. Preet Bains (Secretariat Member, AIC), on 19 April 2026.

Wife of the late Com. Surjit Singh Mann (former leader of AIC/CPI(M) and National President of IWA GB), Jasvir Kaur Mann lived a life defined by commitment, resilience, and sacrifice. After arriving in the UK in 1961, she later returned to Punjab in 1981. Following the tragic murder of Com. Surjit Mann, she pursued justice with remarkable courage and determination despite immense challenges.

A strong and generous comrade, she opened her home and stood in solidarity with generations of activists. Her life remains an enduring example of strength, dignity, and dedication to the movement.

She is survived by her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her memory and legacy.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Com. Preet Bains and the entire bereaved family.

May her memory be a source of strength. Rest in peace.

As we celebrate the meaningful occasion of Vaisakhi, we also take a moment to remember the 1,500+ innocent lives lost in the tragic events of 13 April 1919.

We continue to call for a formal apology to be issued in the House of Commons by a serving Prime Minister, and for British colonial history to be properly included in the national curriculum. While expressions of sympathy have been made over the years, including references to the event as a “barbaric episode,” a formal apology has yet to be given.

We ask a simple question: are all lives valued equally?
We invite you to join us today at 2:00 pm in Committee Room 6 at the House of Commons (room booked by John McDonnell MP) as we come together to seek recognition, accountability, and respect.

Let us make this Vaisakhi a moment of reflection, unity, and progress toward equal human dignity.

Women’s Reservation and Delimitation: Hold Wider Consultations

The CPI(M) has been and is committed to a mandatory reservation of one third seats for women in Parliament and State Assemblies. This is why in 2023, despite our opposition to the linking of women’s reservation to the census and delimitation as proposed in the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam we supported the passage of the Bill as also the 108th Amendment to the Constitution for reservation of one third seats for women. Even at that time we had said that the linkage will mean such a delay that women will be denied their right to one third seats not only in the 2024 elections but also in the 2029 elections.

Now after two years where neither a Delimitation Commission has been set up nor the Census started as promised, the Modi government has come up with new proposals once again without any discussions with the opposition parties despite the repeated demand for an all-party meeting. It is highly objectionable and unacceptable that such a proposal is being made at a time of state assembly elections geared to a narrow political aim of electoral benefit.

The proposal itself makes a fresh link of women’s reservation to another aim, namely an increase in the number of seats in Parliament and in Assemblies through a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 census. This raises many issues which cannot be pushed through and requires discussion and consultation with all states.

The CPI(M) demands that the proposals be postponed to enable wider discussions and consultations with all political parties and states regarding the implication of the increase in seats. We reiterate that women’s reservation can be implemented from the 2029 General Election in the given framework which will require an amendment to delink women’s reservations from the Census and delimitation. But clearly the Modi government lacks the required political will to do so.
