Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?

In the event of a small, developing fire, knowing what to do can make a real difference.

A simple way to remember the basic sequence is PASS:

🔴 P – PULL
Pull the safety pin to unlock the extinguisher.

🔴 A – AIM
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, rather than the flames.

🔴 S – SQUEEZE
Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent.

🔴 S – SWEEP
Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire.

⚠️ But remember…

A fire extinguisher should only be used when it is appropriate for the type of fire, you have been appropriately trained/instructed, the fire is small and manageable, and you have a safe escape route behind you.

Never put yourself at unnecessary risk. If in doubt, evacuate, raise the alarm and call 999.

For businesses, having the right extinguishers isn’t simply about having one on the wall. Their type, suitability, location, accessibility and maintenance should all form part of your fire safety arrangements.

What happens if you don’t have a Fire Risk Assessment?

A Fire Risk Assessment isn’t simply a piece of paperwork to put in a folder.

For businesses and other non-domestic premises in Scotland, fire safety legislation places duties on the dutyholder to assess the risk of fire and put appropriate fire safety measures in place.

A recent Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) fire safety audit provides a good example of why this matters.

During the audit, SFRS identified that the premises required areas for improvement, including the fire risk assessment process.

But it didn’t stop there.

Other issues identified included:

🔴 No available record of staff fire safety training or fire drills
🔴 Fire Action Notices missing
🔴 No available records for fire alarm testing/servicing
🔴 Emergency lighting testing and records requiring attention
🔴 Firefighting equipment requiring appropriate servicing and records
🔴 Improvements required to the positioning and availability of extinguishers

This demonstrates an important point:

A Fire Risk Assessment is the starting point — not the finish line.

Having an FRA sitting in a drawer doesn’t make a business fire safe.

The assessment needs to identify the hazards, evaluate the risks, establish appropriate controls and, importantly, the recommended actions need to be implemented and maintained.

Many people think buying fire extinguishers is the final step. In reality, it's just one part of your fire safety journey.
✅ Step 1: Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) A Fire Risk Assessment identifies the fire risks in your premises and determines whether extinguishers are needed, what type is required, and where they should be located. 12

🔥 SATURDAY FIRE SAFETY CHECK — 5 MINUTES THAT COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE

It’s Saturday, so here’s a quick fire safety check you can do today.

You don’t need to be a fire safety expert. Just walk around your workplace and ask yourself:

🚪 1. Are your escape routes clear?
No stock, boxes, furniture, bins or equipment should obstruct the route to safety.

🔑 2. Can everyone get out quickly?
Check that final exit doors can be opened easily when the premises are occupied and that nobody is relying on a key that may not be immediately available.

🚨 3. Are your fire alarm and emergency lighting systems actually being maintained?
Having equipment installed is not the same as having a properly maintained fire safety system.

🧯 4. Can you find your fire extinguishers?
They should be accessible, appropriately positioned and maintained — not hidden behind stock or used as coat stands!

⚡ 5. Look for obvious electrical hazards.
Damaged cables, overloaded sockets, unsuitable extension leads or electrical equipment showing signs of damage should not be ignored.

And one of the biggest questions:

📋 When was your Fire Risk Assessment last reviewed?

A Fire Risk Assessment shouldn’t simply sit in a folder. It should reflect the actual premises, how it is being used, the people who may be at risk and the precautions currently in place.

For businesses in Scotland, fire safety is supported by specific Scottish legislation and guidance — and responsibility ultimately rests with the relevant dutyholder.
