On Behalf of Eastry Young Peoples Club

I feel the need to clarify this again, as the same conversations about the youth club continue to arise.
The youth club is not owned by the parish council or the recreation grounds. It exists specifically as a youth club and nursery, and it will not be repurposed for any other use. Both services are needed within our village.
At present, the youth club is open on two evenings each week. This is not due to a lack of demand, but a lack of volunteers. The volunteers who currently run these sessions already balance full-time jobs and family commitments alongside their dedication to the club.
The building is also used during the day to support young people through enrichment sessions and as an examination centre for those who may find larger settings challenging. The club operates independently and is self-sufficient, costing the village nothing while continuing to provide valuable services to local young people and families.
Repeatedly questioning the club’s purpose undermines the work of the volunteers and committee members who give their time freely to make it possible. More importantly, it sends a message to the young people who use the club that they are not valued. That is not the kind of message our community should be sending.
The football club has been part of village life for generations, and the people who dedicate their time to its success deserve respect and support. The same should be true for all volunteer-led organisations. The conversations I am hearing do not promote a strong sense of community and often reflect a lack of understanding of what volunteers contribute to village life.
Neither I nor any member of the committee volunteers for recognition. The appreciation we receive from the young people we support is more than enough. However, if you do not fully understand what an organisation does, please take the time to learn about it before criticising or undermining the people who work hard to keep it running.
A thriving community depends on volunteers, and all those who give their time for the benefit of others deserve respect and support.
