Natural England in the Thames Solent Area

Natural England in the Thames Solent Area Natural England working with partners for the benefit of people and the natural environment in Thames Solent.

Natural England’s Thames Solent Team covers London, Surrey, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The team work across a number of areas including: catchment sensitive farming, Land management, Planning, Marine Conservation zones, sustainable development and water quality. The area contains a World Heritage site, 2 National Parks, 9 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beau

ty, 20 National Nature Reserves and 567 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, many of international significance. The habitat in the area includes, Heathland, Chalk Grassland, Ancient Woodland, Wet grassland and Flood plain meadow, Historic Parks and Gardens. This region also supports thriving urban centres and strong economic growth, both of which are set to increase in the future. Consequently, our challenge as an organisation is to ensure that the region remains a great place to live, with healthy natural environments that benefit both people and the economy. We will meet this challenge by pursuing 3 core principles: (1) creating resilient landscapes and seas, (2) putting people at the heart of the environment, and (3) growing natural capital. More information on our approach can be found in our new conservation strategy. Spring awakens at Wealden Heaths National Nature Reserve in ☀

Which means that ground-nesting bird season, which commenced on 1st March, is underway.

Home to rare ground-nesting birds such as Dartford Warbler, Woodlark and Nightjar, we can all help take simple steps to protect rare ground-nesting birds and other sensitive heathland wildlife on the .

✅ Walkers are asked to stay on marked paths and keep dogs on leads throughout the nesting season from March to September to avoid disturbing nests.

✅ Minimise fire risk on heathland - leave BBQ's at home, take litter home and dispose of smoking equipment responsibly.

Wealden Heaths is a part of the King's Series, a programme establishing 25 new National Nature Reserves by 2028.

The reserve is cared for by a partnership of nine organisations: Natural England, RSPB, National Trust, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Hampton Estate, Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Waverley Council, Surrey County Council and Forestry England, with support from the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

🌳 Two new tools for a greener, more climate-resilient, nature-rich London 🦔

The Greater London Authority has just launched the London Green Infrastructure Framework (LGIF) and London’s first Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). These are new, complimentary, spatial tools that provide a strategic evidence base to help transform planning, delivery and management of green and blue spaces and features in London.

The LGIF is an overarching framework that looks at all the different benefits green infrastructure (GI) provides, such as access to green and blue space, clean air, and urban cooling.

The LNRS forms the ‘nature recovery’ layer of the LGIF, informing what actions are most needed for nature in London and where. The LNRS-specific documents and mapping provide important, more detailed information alongside this.

London's Local Nature Recovery Network will make sure London's ecological network to be bigger, better, and more joined up.

We're delighted to share that 'Bill's Story' has won the 'Most Inspiring Film' award at the 2026 Big Blue Film Fest! 🎉

Bill Smith, now 104 years young, recounts his love of sea swimming on the Isle of Wight, to which he owes his long life. However, he has had to stop due to the dangers of pollution.
