During our meeting on Thursday we were very pleased to be able to present our Shipmates, Ken and Rosemary Parker with a small gift to celebrate their recent 64th wedding anniversary. 🥂

Ken has the honour that his father, was the most famous "oldest naval AB" in the Royal Navy, Able Seaman William "George" Parker, BEM. George joined up at the age of 16 in 1916 and served 43 years retiring as an AB. By all accounts George, who served in both the 1st and 2nd WW drew over 300 gallons of Rum during his service. Not all at once I should add. 🥃

Happy anniversary to Ken and Rosemary.

A great buffet lunch get together, last Sunday for some of our shipmates, overlooking the very sunny Sovereign Harbour Marina. Good food, drink and company. Thanks to S/m Keith for the recommendation, and, as always to S/m Jenny for organising.

Last night, Shipmates from Eastbourne RNA were proud to attend the Eastbourne Sea Cadet Unit Friday divisions to see our own S/m Roger Daniels receive the 6th clasp to his Cadet Forces Long Service medal. The 6th clasp represents 50 years of service to cadet Forces, a very special achievement. Roger was presented with his clasp by Rear Admiral John Kingwell CBE Rtd. John is president to local Sea Cadet units and also president of Eastbourne RNA. John also presented awards to many of the young cadets for various achievements.

Rear Admiral Kingwell spoke to the cadets and their proud parents. He congratulated the cadets on their smart turn out, their drill and on the hard work they had put in to gain their awards. He told them and their parents that he knew and believed, the discipline, values and skills that these young people gain from organisations such as the Sea Cadets will be invaluable in their lives. John himself was a sea cadet in Hastings, he is quick to point out that he did not come from a privileged background, his father was a dustman. In his naval career he commanded 3 ships and a multi force task group, retiring as Rear Admiral. He said, if "I can do it so can anyone of these young cadets".

BZ Roger and all of the cadets who received awards.

It is with the greatest sadness that I have to inform you that my friend, our S/m, Life member and RN WWII veteran Harry Waddingham has "Crossed the Bar" at the age of 109. Harry joined the Navy at the age of 16 in 1932, he served through the war as a gunner and PTI. Harry spent most of the war on the Hunt Class destroyer HMS Mendip, a vessel he loved. He was twice torpedoed on other vessels and, on both occasions was thrown in to the sea, once on a Destroyer at Dunkirk, where sadly over 700 troops lost their lives and the second time on HMS Juno in the Med. On both occasions he survived due to the fact that he was a gunner and worked on the upper deck. He went on to teach unarmed combat and also taught pilots how to parachute safely in to the sea. I always remember him saying that, one of the main things he remembers about the war at sea, apart from the fear and constant apprehension, was the utter tiredness. When at sea he was on constant 4 on 4 off watches, He said invariably during the off time the ship would get called to Action stations, they got very little sleep. When he left the mob he became a teacher in London and for many years ran the schools Cadet forces. Truly one of the last of our greatest generation. He lived a long and full life and he will be greatly missed. RIP Shipmate, your duty is done, we have the watch.
