South Downs Volunteers joined Rangers on the lagoon islands clearing scrub to improve habitats for ground nesting birds.

We've an exciting programme of work over the coming years; making changes to how we manage our water levels, creating more welcoming habitats for birds and wildlife - both residents and those just passing through!

We ๐Ÿ’š working with our volunteers on tasks like this, making this landscape a haven for wildlife and nature.

Captured from a distance by one of our Rangers, a Kingfisher resting on a fence thats been spotted a couple of times.

Kingfishers do not breed here, but its a sign of winter coming when we're lucky enough to spot them hanging out.

Have you spotted any funghi during your visit?

Funghi comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes - you never know what you might find in the grassland and woodland on the park.

Always remember some funghi are poisonous, so do your research before touching and if in doubt check in with reliable resources.

Thanks to a kind donation from the Jo Holden Charitable Trust our Shepherds Hut is now open to visitors.

Telling the story of shepherding on the South Downs throughout the 19th and 20th Century, it offers a glimpse into the life of a hard working shepherd and connects the past with today; and how sheep are still a key part of our chalk grassland management.

The Shepherds Hut is usually open daily, but may close in certain weather conditions.

Thank you to for supporting this project.

Signs of autumn.

The fluffy white seed heads of traveller's-joy spotted climbing over hedgerow and scrub - the seeds are a great food source for our goldfinches.

Also known as 'old man's beard' or even 'Father Christmas' at this time of year.
