We just want to say another big well done to our amazing foster carer and nurture lead Camilla, who completed the Moonwalk a couple of weeks ago and raised a fantastic amount of money for Breast Cancer Research 🩷

❓What qualities do I need to become a Foster carer? ❓

At EFS, we are looking for people who can provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for a child who may have experienced trauma, neglect, or significant disruption in their life. Fostering is incredibly rewarding, but does come with it's challenges. We would say the most important qualities to help you succeed in your Fostering journey are -

❤ Patience
❤ Empathy and compassion
❤ Resilience
❤ A Willingness to learn
❤ Flexibility and adaptability
❤ Good communication skills
❤ The ability to provide stability
❤ A good sense of humour!

Inspired by a topic explored in our nurture leads workshop, we're sharing some insight and guidance on those first 24 hours for anyone considering fostering.

🩷Use Curiosity - "I wonder if you're feeling...."
🩷Notice signs of overwhelm - offer quiet choices
🩷Keep transitions slow and well explained
🩷NEVER lie - If you do not know something ("When will I see Mum?") simply say, "I'm not sure yet, but I will find out for you"
🩷Keep them in mind - attuned, observant, calm
🩷Attend to needs before behaviour
🩷Reinforce safety and consistency at every opportunity

Last week EFS celebrated their 15th birthday ❤🎉🎂🎈
We wanted to share a little throwback of our EFS founders El and Tony on their first day in the office 15 years ago! Sadly, Tony isn't with us anymore but we would like to think he'd have been proud of what we have achieved and what we still strive for ❤
Also, well done El for keeping the same houseplant alive for 15 years! Another fantastic achievement! 😀😀

🩷Keep the morning calm and predictable
🩷Offer breakfast they chose the night before
🩷Prepare them for any appointments, school plan or home day
🩷Narrate the day simply - "We're going to meet the social worker, and then we will come home for lunch."

Every day, you open your homes and your hearts to children who need safety, stability, and kindness. You step into moments that aren’t always easy, bringing patience, understanding, and unwavering care. The difference you make goes far beyond what can be measured—you are helping to rebuild trust, create belonging, and shape brighter futures.

We see your dedication in the quiet, everyday moments as much as in the big milestones. We see the compassion, the resilience, and the strength it takes to keep showing up. And we are endlessly grateful.
