Nepacs

Nepacs Nepacs is a long established charity which aims to support a positive future for prisoners and their families in the north east of England.

Nepacs aims to support and enhance the lives of people as they navigate the justice or social care systems, ensuring they always have someone trusted by their side, aiding understanding, facilitating wellbeing and promoting positive choices. We recognise that every year thousands of families, and especially children, may become hidden victims of crime when a relative is imprisoned. From the moment

of arrest and throughout the court process and prison sentence, families are at risk of social isolation and stigma which can affect their emotional, physical, financial and social wellbeing. The impact of imprisonment can be devastating, which is why our staff and volunteers provide friendship and support throughout this difficult time - from the courts in Teesside, Newcastle and Durham, to helping families to maintain contact during the prison sentence through our prison visitors’ centres, family support workers, and child and youth projects and then, at the end of the journey, offering families support on what to expect when their loved one is released. We aim to:
• Support and assist prisoners, families and friends of prisoners in their visits to the prison and in their life outside the prison
• Ensure that children visiting relatives in prison will feel welcome and find the experience as pleasant as possible
• Relieve hardship due to the poverty of some offenders and their families.
• Support the education and training of offenders, and other processes which may assist their rehabilitation
• Raise public awareness through the collection and publication of information relating to criminal justice matters and to the prevention of crime. Have you ever thought about volunteering?

Our visits teams are looking for volunteers to join them in supporting children and families visiting friends or relatives at:
- HMP Northumberland, near Morpeth
- HMP Holme House (Stockton) and HMP Kirklevington (near Yarm)
- HMP Frankland, HMP Low Newton, HMP Durham (in or near Durham) and HMP Deerbolt near Barnard Castle

There are a range of volunteer opportunities to support families during visits including in the visitors centre, tea bars and play areas.

We would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering to join with us and share in our experience of providing a warm and friendly environment for families visiting loved ones in prison.

We greet people from all walks of life from near and far so it’s important that everyone is treated with respect, and feel welcome in a place and situation they may never have thought they would ever be.

Could you give the gift of time and join our team of volunteers?

Find out more https://www.nepacs.co.uk/page/become-a-volunteer or email [email protected] to find out about volunteering roles in your area.
We would love to hear from you.

Our Holme House Visits and Play teams are all aboard and sailing into the warmer months with this beautiful new noticeboard. The display was created with the help of visiting children, who coloured in the ships in bottles that bring it to life.

What’s the impact of delivering creative work in a prison?

Blue Cabin and Nepacs have worked with tialt to understand the stories, outcomes and questions emerging from Creative Aid – a partnership project which supports care experienced young men in HMP / YOI Deerbolt.

Working to be recognised as artists helps them gain skills, strengthen relationships with peers, family and prison staff, and reduces their likelihood of reoffending.

You can read a summary of the impact here: https://www.nepacs.co.uk/page/creative-aid-year-3-evaluation-summary-report-

Our team at HMP Durham visits centre would like to thank the very kind visitor who generously donated these gorgeous, hand-crafted cuddly toys for children who are visiting a parent or relative in the prison.

These lovely gifts will help children feel comforted and secure when they are given the cuddly toys during a visit and to take home with them.

Thank you!

We would like to join in sending our heartfelt thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund (The National Lottery ), who have awarded a grant of £150,000 to Blue Cabin to enable them to continue delivering Creative Aid in HMP / YOI Deerbolt - a project which is delivered in partnership with our Nepacs care leaver team.

Creative Aid supports care experienced people in prison to work with artists in residence to explore different artforms.

It’s been shown to result in:

🔹Strengthened relationships with peers, family and prison staff
🔹New skills and pathways, supporting access to education and employment
🔹Making of pro-social choices that reduce reliance on harmful coping strategies
🔹Increased confidence, self-worth, and motivation to engage in education and employment - protective factors against reoffending
🔹Improved wellbeing and emotional literacy, enabling individuals to better understand and manage stress and conflict

And thanks to The we can continue this work for another two years 💙
