PCC Joy Allen has been reappointed as local Patron for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, an organisation providing vital support to veterans, serving personnel and military families across the county.

SSAFA’s work helps tackle loneliness, isolation, trauma and crisis, offering practical, emotional and family support to those affected by military life. As Police and Crime Commissioner, Joy Allen recognises the strong links between vulnerability, mental health and community safety, and the importance of early support.

Working alongside SSAFA and local partners, she is committed to raising awareness of the help available and ensuring veterans and their families are not left behind.

âš½ One line can end the game.

That’s our message to drug drivers who choose to play with people’s lives by drug driving this World Cup.

With the first game set to kick off in exactly a week’s time, officers are asking drivers not to risk ending their own life or someone else’s by driving under the influence.

Whilst the vast majority of drivers now accept that drink driving is unacceptable after it became illegal nearly seven decades ago, we have seen a rise in those taking drugs and driving in recent years.

Unlike the feeling of being drunk, drug drivers can often appear ‘normal’ with some passengers not realising they’re getting a lift off an unfit driver.

But what they don’t realise is that drugs can seriously impair their ability to drive, often leading to devastating consequences.

Drugs can also stay in your system for days after consumption, making it harder to tell if you’re fit to drive.

And if you’re stopped by one of our officers on patrol this World Cup season, that’s probably the end of the game for your job and driving licence.

If you’re lucky you’ll be replacing them with a criminal record. If you’re unlucky, our officers will be visiting your family to break the news you died because you were drug driving.

PCC Joy Allen is proud to support , a new national campaign launching during Child Safety Week to help keep children safer on our roads.

The campaign encourages parents and carers to keep children rear‑facing in car seats until at least four years old - and longer where possible. Evidence shows children are up to five times safer when travelling rear‑facing compared to forward‑facing.

Rear Face for Safety brings together road safety professionals, policing, child injury prevention specialists, public health experts and academics, alongside Swedish road safety experts whose approach has helped make Sweden one of the safest countries in the world for children on the road.

A new mobile ‘safe space’ service is set to boost safety in Darlington’s night-time economy, following a £33,000 funding award from PCC Joy Allen and partners.

The Street Friends initiative will replace the former Number Forty hub, providing on‑the‑street medical support for anyone who feels vulnerable or unwell on a night out. Staffed by paramedics and supported by trained volunteers, the service will help reduce pressure on emergency services while improving safety and reassurance - particularly for women and girls.

This investment supports ongoing work to tackle serious violence and make town centres safer, stronger and more welcoming for everyone.

Following concerns raised by local residents about speeding, we’ve been out in High Pittington today supporting a Community Speedwatch activity to help raise awareness and improve road safety.

This is a reminder that a national speed limit only applies once you pass the sign – not when approaching it. Maintaining the legal speed limit helps keep everyone safe, especially in residential areas.

If speeding is an issue where you live, make sure you attend your local PACT meeting to raise concerns directly with your neighbourhood police team.

Anti-social behaviour can have a real and lasting effect on people’s lives - from feeling unsafe in your own neighbourhood to the impact on local pride and wellbeing. That’s why it’s so important that we hear directly from residents about what matters most, what’s working, and where more needs to be done.
