Redhills Durham

Redhills Durham Redhills Durham has been constituted as a charity to serve as stewards of Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall on behalf of Durham Coalfield communities.

We have a clear mission to harness our living heritage to revitalise our coalfield communities. Durham Miners Hall, known as Redhills, opened in Durham City in 1915. Paid for by two hundred thousand working miners, the hall was a democratic hub and the heart of the Durham Coalfield. From Redhills, collective decisions were made, transforming the cultural and social fabric of County Durham; homes f

or aged miners were commissioned, healthcare for sick and injured miners provided, and welfare halls and reading rooms were built. It provided these services to the people of the coalfield a generation before the national welfare state was established. Redhills is Grade II listed, with its ‘Pitman's Parliament’ named by Historic England as one of its ' 100 irreplaceable places. It is ranked alongside the Palace of Westminster as one of the country's top ten landmarks in England's power, protest and progress history. Redhills is a beacon celebrating a unique heritage of social progress through community enterprise

There’s still time to get your free ticket for tonight’s Understanding Class Politics event at Redhills. It’s going to be a good one.

Ticket link is in the post below.

Class politics once felt clear-cut. Today, it looks very different. Voting patterns are shifting, long-standing loyalties are weakening, and new political identities are emerging across working-class communities. What’s driving this change, and what does it mean for the future?

Join Faiza Shaheen and Mike Savage at Redhills Durham on 22nd June for an evening exploring shifts in working-class politics and what this means for the future.

Getting excited to meet the fab candidates who applied to join our board at Redhills Durham this Friday.

They'll be browsing our resources, sharing a cuppa with & as we get to know each other.

Can't wait to be able to say who will be coming on board (which will, needless to say, be announced through the medium of illustration!)!

This is a really important moment for us as we build up our board ready to start the journey from CIC to CIO. Cross your fingers for us folks!

With thanks to for these lovely images from our Us Too project which aimed to highlight the diversity of people affected by domestic abuse.

***SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT***

The Unthanks in Winter
Friday 4th December
2 Shows - 6.30pm & 8.30pm

We're delighted to announce The Unthanks will be giving two performances of their show 'In Winter' here at Redhills on Friday 4th December 2026. Tickets will be available from 12pm on Friday 19th June.

In their typical magpie style, The Unthanks collect and reimagine, at once unique and familiar, inventive but natural and effortless. Hear a Tyneside band playing a German Christmas song in the style of The Beach Boys; a Spanish carol performed by English folkies through the filter of Tom Waits; a French carol given desert-blues menace, a newly written tribute to the NHS to the tune of O Holy Night; a wintry opening piece inspired by A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten; traditional wassails and old stories coloured with folk noir and traces of Vincent Guaraldi’s Merry Christmas Charlie Brown.

Experience this special evening in the wonderful surroundings of Redhills' historic Pitman's Parliament.

It’s today and we are very close to capacity!
So just a word about parking. We have limited parking on site so it would be great if we could leave as much of the parking places as possible for those who really need to be parked close by. Flass St, Sutton St and Waddington St are only 2 minutes walk away. It’s 4 minutes to North Road and 7 minutes to the multi story at the Railway Station.
See you later for “A Grand Day Out”!

Join us on Sunday 5th July as we premiere the brand new documentary from Tower Film & Media in the Pitmans Parliament.

Defiant - County Durham The Miners' Strike, And Its Legacy is a documentary film that captures the in depth story of Durham's part in the 1984/ 85 Miners' Strike, including the devastation wrought on our pit communities following the final colliery closures.

Focusing on local voices and the testimony of those that were there, Defiant features both the situation within the county, and how wider events (including the Battle of Orgreave) created shock waves on our streets.

It is a story of community, struggle, and a defiant pride that still defines County Durham.

As Alan Margdhum says, “Tell it as it was. That you know, that’s the important story to get across, is what really happened. What will shine through and what will come through is the resilience of the people of Durham.”

Doors open at 6pm and there'll be live music from Bill Elliot in the Banner room before heading up to the screening beginning at 7pm.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A featuring:
Marie Gardiner, Mark Thorburn (Lonely Tower)
Heather Wood (Easington Colliery Support Group)
Keith Pattison (Photographer)
Rob Crute (Blackhall)
Mary Stratford (Lumley & Bournmoor Support Group)

We’re having a Big Energy Party, and you’re invited! 🎉

With your help, Threads in the Ground are creating a massive moment for Durham’s history of Energy Democracy – the launch of the Durham Energy Manifesto.

The manifesto is crafted by volunteers from across Durham – it’s the words, feelings, worries, and hopes of regular people, amplified loud from Redhills just like our Ancestors’ were.

Expect food, games, talks, a film screening, and a big energy quiz.
All welcome!
