Louisa Colliery Disaster 22nd August 1947. 79 years since 22 pitmen lost their lives. The community of Stanley and the Town Council remembered them today ,joined by representatives from the Durham Miners' Association and met two sons of one of the disaster victims, one not two years old when his dad was killed.

Today marks 79 years since the pit disaster at Louisia Colliery in Stanley. Declan Mullholland Durham Miners' Association , explained , "Friends, neighbours, and members of our community,
We gather today in the quiet of remembrance to mark exactly 79 years since the devastating night of August 22nd, 1947. Nearly eight decades have passed since the Louisa Pit disaster tore through the heart of Stanley, yet the passage of time has not dimmed the profound respect we hold for the 22 brave men who never returned home from their shift.
They were fathers, sons, brothers, and friends. They were the very backbone of County Durham, working in the dark and dangerous depths of the earth to power a nation rebuilding itself after the war. When the explosion ripped through the Morrison Old Colliery just before midnight, it didn't just claim 22 lives—it shattered an entire community, leaving behind grieving widows, fatherless children, and a void that words could never truly fill.
Mining shaped our landscape, but it was the strength and solidarity of the people that shaped our character. Today, as we stand together in 2026, we ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. We owe it to their memory to keep their stories alive, to honor the tight-knit bonds of our pit villages, and to carry forward the legacy of resilience they left behind.
Let us hold a moment of silence for those 22 miners of the Louisa Pit. May they rest in eternal peace, forever remembered, and forever a part of who we are."
