STEP STEP is a rights-based community organisation offering advice, support and advocacy across Mid Ulster.

From our initial work in 1997, STEP has translated its aims and objectives into community action through community development principles. STEP exists as an organic organisation, growing and evolving in order to meet the changing needs of our developing society. Our organisational activities and projects range from small group development to large partnership projects and trans-national networks, but our core purpose and principles never change.

STEP, in partnership with Mid Ulster District Council is recognising 2026 across with a week-long programme of community events, cultural activities and Simple Acts of kindness and courage designed to bring people together.

Taking place from 15–21 June, Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

This year’s theme is Courage β€” recognising the everyday courage shown by people rebuilding their lives in new communities, while encouraging all of us to show courage through welcome, connection and compassion.

Throughout the week, STEP and the Council are inviting individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and organisations across Mid Ulster to take part in the Refugee Week 'Simple Acts' campaign β€” encouraging small everyday actions that help build understanding and belonging.

*Human rights aren’t pick and mix.*

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) isn’t abstract. It protects people in everyday life, in schools, hospitals, care settings, workplaces, courts and detention.

That’s why we’ve added our name as one of the 90+ signatures to a joint cross-border civil society letter ahead of the Council of Europe meeting in Moldova later this week.

The letter calls on the UK and Irish Governments to defend the ECHR, protect the independence of the European Court of Human Rights and reject any declaration that minimises rights for any individual or group.

Human rights are universal. Once exceptions start for some people, everyone’s protections become less certain.

We want both governments to reject any declaration that narrows, reinterprets or creates a hierarchy of rights or rights‑holders.

Either everyone has rights, or no one does.
