HMS Scotia

HMS Scotia HMS Scotia is the principal Royal Naval Reserve unit for the East of Scotland. Based in Rosyth, we also have a satellite unit, Tay Division, in Dundee.

In 1958, a RNR Headquarters Unit was formed at the Maritime Head Quarters (MHQ) Pitreavie in Fife, to provide augmentee personnel for the Staff of Flag Officer Scotland. The name HMS SCOTIA was adopted in 1960. The previous ship of that name was a Royal Naval Signals wartime shore training establishment, in Ayr. In 1962, HMS SCOTIA moved out of the underground MHQ, into accommodation above ground

nearby. In the post Cold War defence review of 1994, the unit absorbed reservists from the closing Units of HMS Camperdown in Dundee and HMS Claverhouse in Edinburgh, to become the largest RNR unit in the UK. In 1996, following the closure of both MHQ Pitreavie and HM Naval Base Rosyth, HMS SCOTIA relocated to its current buildings within HMS CALEDONIA. Tay Division, HMS SCOTIA's satellite unit, was set up in Dundee in 1999.

๐Ÿ”ฅ A massive BZ to all the Scotians who braved a toasty day last weekend as they took part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival!

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ From some of our newest recruits, to more experienced old hands all put in a massive effort truly embodying HMS Scotia's motto "Gang for it"

โ‰๏ธ Though we do question the decision of Lt McGillivray to make 26 miles even harder by wearing a weighted vest! Though admittedly it was all in aid of a good cause raising money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, alongside AB Dalziel who also ran in aid of the charity!

๐ŸŽ‰ BZ all!

โš“๏ธ We were delighted to recently welcome Commodore Jo Adey, Commander of the Maritime Reserve to Scotia recently, giving members of the ship's company to get to interact directly and gain a great understanding of the role of the Royal Naval Reserve.

๐Ÿ† The evening was also an opportunity for the Commodore alongside the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Fife to present a number of well earned awards to Scotians. From Lord-Lieutenant's award for meritous service to 1* awards for providing medical care following an injury during a training exercise.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ As Commander of the Maritime Reserves, Commodore Adey, leads the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve and University Royal Naval Unit.

Today HMS Scotia were privileged to participate in a memorial service to mark 83 years since the sinking of HMS Dasher, representing the Royal Naval Reserve alongside HMS Dalriada.

HMS Dasher sank with the loss of 379 of her ship's company on 27th March 1943. The service today was attended by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

A particularly poignant moment this year came with the awarding of the Arctic Star to a number of family members of those lost on that day.

โš“ This weekend we had the opportunity to invite some of our ship's company's civilian employees to a unique employer engagement event aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ The event held in the carrier's hangar gave employers an opportunity to gain an insight into the training their employees undertake in the Royal Naval Reserve, from first aid to training using a virtual bridge simulating a Royal Navy vessel. Employer engagement events are vital to both recognise the support employers give their reservists, but also the skills reservists bring back to their civilian employer, from first aid to leadership skills.

โœ’๏ธ Both Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association and Lowland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association were in attendance, with a number of employers recognised for their support for Reservists. Forth Ports Limited signing the Armed Forces Convenant, and Gray Fabrication Ltd receiving a Bronze Employer Recognition Scheme Award. BZ both!

๐Ÿ”๏ธ One of our ABs recently had chance to take part in adventure training in the snow covered hills of Scotland.

โ›๏ธ The winter mountaineering course focused on giving those attending the critical foundational skills to be safe in the mountains in winter from how to use ice axes and crampons, to navigating in the challenge of a white out.

๐Ÿ’ช Adventure training helps to build resilience and teamwork, is just one of the varied ways the Royal Naval Reserve develops our people. And of course it is a great opportunity for fun!

๐Ÿฆ„ Recently we were delighted to welcome HMS Unicorn to visit HMS Scotia, where they got a taste of the training our reservists undertake.

โš“๏ธ This continues a long association between HMS Scotia and HMS Unicorn particularly with our satellite unit Tay Division who are based in Dundee. The Royal Naval Reserve first utilised HMS Unicorn as a drill ship in 1873 moored in Dundee, and she continued in this role until 1967 when the original Tay Division moved ashore.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ It was great to have the HMS Unicorn staff visit and they were given a chance to test our RHIB simulator, and the connection we share with the oldest ship in Scotland will always be a special one!

๐Ÿ‘€ This link is one of many we have built within our community, from local veterans organisations to Historic Scotland!

๐ŸงญHMS Scotia were delighted to welcome Captain North to the unit last week as part of his visit to RNR Scotland, with HMS Dalriada welcoming the Captain earlier in the week.

๐Ÿ†The visit was also an opportunity to catch-up on the presentation of awards which had been missed at our Christmas Divisons, when only CPO Paul had been present to receive his 2 awards! For Scotian of the year, and Permanent Staff member of the year.

๐ŸฅณThis time it was Lt Cdr Ross, Lt Sophie and our SLt Callum being presented their awards. They respectively received the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Fife's award, the Taylor Award and the Duncan Award - find out more about each on their photo!
