AFFF Fire Extinguisher
New UK rules will ban the use of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) fire extinguishers containing PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) from July 4, 2025, due to environmental and health concerns about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Businesses must remove and properly dispose of these extinguishers as hazardous waste and replace them with compliant alternatives, such as fluorine-free or water mist extinguishers.
What the new rules mean
Effective date: From July 4, 2025, the use, testing, and maintenance of AFFF extinguishers containing PFOA will be prohibited in the UK.
Reason for the ban: These AFFF extinguishers contain PFAS, including the "forever chemical" PFOA, which does not break down easily in the environment and has been linked to health issues.
Containment exception: The only exception is if all foam discharge can be fully contained, which is rarely practical in most workplace situations.
Your responsibilities
Identify AFFF extinguishers: Check all your fire extinguishers to see if they contain AFFF, especially those containing PFOA. If you are unsure, you can check the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or contact the manufacturer.
Dispose of non-compliant extinguishers: Extinguishers that are found to be non-compliant must be disposed of as hazardous waste through a certified waste disposal company.
Replace with compliant alternatives: Switch to safer, environmentally friendly alternatives, such as water mist, fluorine-free foam, or P50 extinguishers.
Ensure compatibility: When selecting a replacement, ensure it is suitable for the specific classes of fire (A, B, C, etc.) identified in your fire risk assessment.
