This week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact of our volunteers across Dundee Libraries 💙

Our volunteer team are fantastic ambassadors for libraries and bring a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and energy to everything they do. From helping us innovate to connecting us with new audiences, their contribution is truly invaluable. Their skills and dedication play a vital role in shaping modern library services—and we couldn’t do it without them!

Fold a square of paper the right way and it makes a perfect bookmark to keep your place. Leave it plain or decorate it with your initials or your favourite book quote.

What’s on in Creative Central in June?

Every day:

Make a corner bookmark
Help us with our community knit by adding some rows to our knitted squares.
Work on one of our jigsaws
Build with our Lego
Do some colouring in

Every fortnight:

Drawing for All Abilities - Thursday 4th and 18th, 6-7.30 - A social drawing group for all levels of ability. Instruction and refreshments provided.

Crochet for All Abilities - Thursday 11th and 25th*, 11-12. A social crochet group for beginner and experienced crocheters. Instruction, materials and refreshments provided. On the 25th the session will be self-led.

Sew Along – Thursday 11th and 25th, 3-5 – An opportunity to use the library sewing machines and overlocker for anyone who already has sewing skills. This is not a sewing lesson, but our volunteer will be there to supervise and help if needed.

Plus, our monthly sessions which are:

Creative Writing - Monday 1st, 6-7.30 - A social group for writers and aspiring writers. Refreshments provided. *This group is currently full, and we are operating a waiting list*

Felt Crafts - Tuesday 2nd, 10.30-11.30 - Sewing simple items out of felt, with instruction for beginners. Refreshments provided.

3D Printing Drop In - Thursday 25th, 5-6 - Drop in to ask questions and learn about 3D printing.

Sew Good Together - Tuesday 30th, 2-4 - A social sewing group for those interested in clothes making. Refreshments provided.

Booking is not required for any of these activities. Participants must be 16 or over for all timetabled sessions. Under 16s may participate in our 'every day’ activities if they are supervised by an adult.

“I was often in my local library running group activities in my paid job. The staff were friendly and it’s a great community space to deliver activities in. When my situation changed staff suggested volunteering to me.

I hadn’t realised that was an option before. During my induction to library services I learned there are a diverse range of groups and activities on offer supported by skilled volunteers.

I now support group activities on a regular basis myself. I am pleased I was able to maintain my connection to the people and place in my community in this way, which is really rewarding. I see this as a long-term commitment, and I am looking forward to growing the group and seeing what we achieve together”

“I was a carer for my Mum and came into the library to find out more about support available to us. They were very helpful and able to give me the information I needed. They also have free health checks on offer on a regular basis, which you can sign up for with health professionals.

I was surprised to find quite a large area full of health information leaflets and books and someone to talk to. It has a great view and comfortable places to sit, tucked away in a quieter area.

They let me know about local support groups and put me in touch with a service who helped with work and money and filling out forms. I decided to come back and volunteer myself as I feel this is such a needed resource and I wanted to help others who may be in the situation I had been in.”

“I was helping out at the local community centre when I heard about the volunteering opportunity in the library. It is in the same building, and I always enjoy spending time there. The staff are friendly and always have time for a chat. They seemed like a nice group of people to work with. It was close to where I stayed so meant I wouldn't need to travel; I could walk there.

They were setting up a new service, and they provided training and support. I was a bit nervous to start with, but I needn’t have been. As well as training there was always someone on hand to answer questions and get advice. I think it’s great that we offer the Databank in our centre. It is a much-needed service with the cost-of-living crisis, people are finding things really tough. We are all expected now to do everything online.

For those that need help the Databank can gift free sim cards. It is handy for people it is in the same building where they come for the food parcels and money advice, it is really handy having them so close together and on at the same time. It makes a big difference to people, and I feel I am playing my part.”
