Street of the Week: Cross Row

This short street was probably named this as it was a way to cross between Small's Wynd and Park Wynd. Although not marked there is a short street between the two wynd's in Crawford's map of 1793. The street was a mix of one storey houses, 2 storey flats and 3 storey tenements.

By the 20th century many of the homes on the street were identified as slums and were demolished as part of the Small's Wynd Clearance Area in the late 1920s. On the north side of the street the Corporation built 2 blocks of tenement flats. In the 1960s these were sold to the University of Dundee and converted into office space.

Whilst the Law has been part of the Dundee's backdrop since time immemorial, the road to the top is a relatively new feature. Find out when and why it was built in our latest blog post.

Inspired by some photographs from our Engineers Negatives collection, one of our volunteers looks into the construction of the road up to the top of the Law.

This the rear of the 3 storey tenement which sat on the corner of Hawkhill and 2 Small's Wynd. A back court entrance divides the two buildings and runs the length of the rear of the buildings to Wallace's Pend.
