Dundee Salvation Army Dundee Corps - 'like' us for up to date information on events, plus pictures from the past! In 1878 The Christian Mission was renamed The Salvation Army.

Since The Salvation Army was born on the streets of the East End of London in 1865, we have gone from strength to strength – carrying on the commitment of our founders to serve God and to serve suffering humanity by fighting against social injustice. As military terminology became more commonplace, Booth became known as the 'General', a suitable shortening of the title of 'General Superintendent'

that he held as the head of The Christian Mission. A 'Deed of Constitution' outlining his duties and responsibilities, which included the power to appoint a successor, was drawn up. Mission station preachers were given the rank of Captain and uniforms suitable to the ranks followed. A military discipline governed the lives of the officers. Writing in 'The Salvationist' in 1879 Booth summed up the purpose of the Army in the following simple but striking way: "We are a salvation people - this is our specialty - getting saved and keeping saved, and then getting somebody else saved, and then getting saved ourselves more and more until full salvation on earth makes the heaven within, which is finally perfected by the full salvation without, on the other side of the river." The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social care in the UK today, after the government. The work started in the 1880s and continues to grow and develop in a range of areas including homelessness, addiction services and anti human trafficking. Music forms an integral part of Salvation Army worship and evangelism. Bands and songster brigades are an important part of church life and public events with the brass band as the most recognised feature of Salvation Army music.

🌊👣 Food for Thought this Week:

I want to take you to a beach for a moment. Maybe it’s Broughty Ferry, St Andrews, or somewhere else around the beautiful coastline of the UK.

Picture yourself walking along the shoreline, leaving footprints in the sand. For a while they are clear to see, marking every step you’ve taken. Then the waves roll in and quietly wash them away.

It made me think about how often we hold on to things that God has already forgiven, healed, or taken from us. Past mistakes. Past hurts. Past regrets.

The footprints disappear, but the journey remains. The lessons stay. The growth stays. God’s faithfulness stays.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” — Psalm 103:12

Maybe today is the day to stop looking behind and start walking forward.

🌊✝️ What footprints are you still holding on to that God has already washed away?

❤️ Jesus Loves Me: A Timeless Truth ❤️

Today at Dundee Salvation Army, we gathered to celebrate one of the most precious and enduring truths of the Christian faith: that Jesus loves us. Through worship, praise, fellowship and reflection, we were reminded of the depth, certainty and personal nature of God's love for each one of us.

Throughout May, we have been journeying through our series "This Is My Story, This Is My Song", where members of our congregation have had the opportunity to share their testimony through a song that holds special meaning for them. It has been a real blessing to hear how God has been at work in people's lives and to get to know one another more deeply through these personal stories of faith. These testimonies have encouraged, challenged and uplifted us as we celebrate God's faithfulness together.

Today's song was the much-loved hymn "Jesus Loves Me". While often thought of as a children's song, its simple words contain some of the deepest truths of the Christian faith. The meeting was centred around the message of this hymn, with our Bible reading taken from 1 John 4:7–21, which reminds us that God is love and that we love because He first loved us.

As we reflected on the words of Jesus Loves Me, we considered three important truths:

❤️ God's love is personal – "Jesus loves me, this I know." These words remind us that we are not simply part of a crowd. We are known, valued and loved individually by Jesus.

📖 God's love is revealed in Scripture – "For the Bible tells me so." Our confidence in God's love is not based on feelings alone, but on the truth of His Word.

👶 Childlike faith matters – "Little ones to Him belong." Children have an incredible ability to trust. As Christians, we are called to place the same wholehearted trust in Jesus, believing His promises and following Him faithfully.

We also reflected on the final verse of the hymn, which points us towards the hope we have in Christ:

"Jesus loves me! He will stay, close beside me all the way; if I love Him, when I die, He will take me home on high."

What a comforting reminder that Jesus walks with us through every season of life and that His love extends beyond this life into eternity. This is the glorious hope that we have as Christians.

Sometimes the simplest songs carry the greatest truths. Today we were reminded that Jesus' love is real, personal and unchanging; that faith is built on the truth of God's Word; and that our response should be one of trust, obedience and devotion.

As we begin a new week, may we hold on to this timeless truth:

Jesus loves me, this I know.

🙏 We pray that you will know the depth of God's love for you this week, experience His presence beside you, and find peace in walking closely with Him.

What a special time of worship and praise we shared together today (Sunday) at Dundee Salvation Army as we gathered to celebrate Pentecost!

Reflecting on Acts 2, we were reminded of the incredible power of the Holy Spirit, how the disciples moved from sitting in fear to standing boldly, proclaiming the Gospel and stepping out into the world. As Salvationists, Pentecost speaks deeply into our message of “Blood and Fire”, the saving power of Jesus and the empowering fire of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout May, our “This Is My Story, This Is My Song” series has been blessing us as members share their testimonies through song and story, encouraging and uplifting one another as they reflect on what God has done in their lives. Today, we were privileged to hear from Major David Gauton as he and Major Elizabeth Gauton celebrated an incredible 60 years since their commissioning as Salvation Army Officers. We are so grateful for their faithful service and ministry within our corps family.

We also celebrated the gift of a new Corps flag, a beautiful reminder of our faith and the message of Blood and Fire. As part of this, we were reminded of the meaning behind the colours of the Salvation Army flag: yellow, representing the fire of the Holy Spirit, red, symbolising the blood of Jesus Christ shed for all, and blue, reminding us of purity and holy living. What a fitting reflection as we celebrated Pentecost together.

It was also wonderful to welcome back the Dundee Salvation Army Brass Band, leading worship for the first time in several years.

Finally, congratulations to our Corps Officer Major Helen, celebrating 38 years since her commissioning as a Salvation Army Officer. We thank God for her faithful dedication and service to our corps family.

🔥 Our challenge for the week: Like the disciples in Acts 2, will we move from simply sitting to standing? Will we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with courage to live out the message of Blood and Fire, sharing God’s love, hope, and Gospel boldly in our daily lives? Let us step out in faith and be Spirit-led wherever God places us this week.

🔥 FOOD FOR THOUGHT THIS WEEK 🔥

Are We Sitting Still, Or Are We Doing Mission?

As we move towards Pentecost, and prepare to celebrate the birth of the Church, here’s a question to carry with you this week:

Are we sitting still, or are we doing mission?

When Jesus ascended, He didn’t leave His followers with a comfortable faith. He left them with a mission.

At Pentecost, the Church was born in fire 🔥
Not to stay still.
Not to stay comfortable.
But to go and bring hope into the world.

And here’s the thing, mission is often much simpler, and much closer to home, than we realise.

It might look like:

✨ Sending a message to someone who has gone quiet
✨ Checking in on a neighbour who lives alone
✨ Listening to someone having a difficult week
✨ Helping someone practically when life feels overwhelming
✨ Choosing kindness when it would be easier to walk away
✨ Inviting someone for a coffee, a chat, or even to church

Because mission isn’t always loud.

Sometimes mission looks like simply showing up for people.

The Salvation Army began on the streets of London because people saw hurt and struggle and decided not to walk past it. They chose to do something.

In 1910, over 116 years ago, founder General William Booth stood in the Royal Albert Hall and said:

“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight. While little children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight… While there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight — I’ll fight to the very end!”

Over a century later, his words still feel relevant.

People are still hurting.
Loneliness still exists.
Hope is still needed.

🔥 So this week, ask yourself:
Are you sitting still, or are you doing mission? 🔥

Who could you show up for this week?

Today at Dundee Salvation Army, we gathered together for a special time of worship and praise as we reflected on Ascension Sunday through Acts 1:1–11.

Ascension Sunday is often overlooked. At Christmas, we celebrate with joy. At Easter, we rejoice in triumph. Next week, we will celebrate Pentecost with fire and expectation. Yet Ascension Sunday can sometimes feel like a forgotten moment in between.

But today reminded us that the Ascension is not simply a footnote at the end of the Gospel story. It marks the moment where Jesus completed His earthly ministry to begin His heavenly one.

As we imagined the scene in Acts, perhaps the best way to describe it was 'holy confusion'. What must it have been like for the disciples as Jesus ascended before their eyes? You could almost imagine it unfolding like a dramatic cinematic moment, perhaps something imagined by directors such as Steven Spielberg or Christopher Nolan, awe-inspiring, overwhelming, and impossible to fully process.

Yet the angels’ words, “Why do you stand here looking into the sky?”, were not a rebuke. Instead, they pointed the disciples, and us, towards something greater: Jesus reigns.

In a world that feels crushed politically and socially, we were reminded of this powerful truth: **Christ reigns supreme**. Jesus rules with calm, authority and power because He is Lord over all.

To truly understand the Ascension, we revisited the role of the high priest in the Old Testament and the book of Hebrews. Jesus is our great High Priest, now in heaven, interceding on our behalf. Like a frightened child needing a parent to speak to the headteacher after making a mistake, Jesus stands for us, speaks for us, and walks with us.

He is everywhere.
He is present.
He is with us.

But the Ascension was not the end of Jesus’ ministry; it was the beginning of ours.

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus entrusted His Church with a mission: to go, make disciples, and embody His Kingdom here on earth. And the incredible thing is this: He entrusts that mission to ordinary people like you and me.

So today’s challenge remains with us:

Are we doing the mission of God in our everyday lives? Are we living out His Kingdom regularly? Are we doing His work today?

As we left worship this morning, may we remember: Ascension is not the end of the story; it is the beginning of the Church’s calling.
