North Solway Bird-ringing Group will be giving a public demonstration of ringing wild birds next Saturday morning at RSPB Mersehead (between 9am and noon).

Get a chance to see close-up how songbirds are ringed and find out more about how this work can help in conservation efforts to better understand many of these species. There may also be a chance to see some of the birds passing through this reserve while on migration.

The event will take place in Meida Hide (1100m walk from visitor centre, along our wheelchair accessible trail).

The experience is free but there will be a charge for car parking for any non-RSPB members attending.

A few days ago we discovered this beautiful stripy caterpillar on the Meida Hide boardwalk at Mersehead.

Once this caterpillar is fully grown, it will pupate in the soil where it will overwinter before emerging next year as a Buff-tip moth.

Buff-tip moths are an incredible, cryptic species that look just like a broken twig!! An amazing example of camouflage 🪵

Tubifera ferruginosa, otherwise known as the Red Raspberry slime mold! Look out for this species at this time of the year on pieces of decaying wood 🍄🪵

We still have a few spaces left for the upcoming Bat Night (talk and walk) next week, on Friday 4 September.

Bats are often misunderstood and less well known as birds are. Yet, they are pretty awesome and useful creatures. Join us for an evening of discovering more about bats here in South Scotland and have a go at identifying some of them.

The event will begin with a short illustrated talk, before we head out to find some bats on the reserve. We will provide a limited number of bat detectors and infra-red cameras but please bring a torch if you have one.

There is no age limit to this event but please note that this would probably not be suitable for young children (under 7 years). The walk will also be wheelchair accessible.
