🌸 Some last-minute entries for Dumfries Bloom & Shine! 🌸

We are delighted to welcome two more fantastic entries to our fun, friendly competition!

🌿 Lincluden Community Centre have created a lovely display featuring floral planters, herbs and even potatoes! 🥔🌼

🏓 Dumfries Table Tennis Club have joined their four planters together to create a fantastic square display. They have already been receiving some lovely comments from members and passers-by. They would love to add even more, but are waiting to see if these ones make it safely through first! 🤞 Fingers crossed they don’t get vandalised.

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in Dumfries Bloom & Shine this year. It has been wonderful to see so many people, groups and organisations getting involved and helping to brighten up Dumfries. 🌺✨

👀 The judges will be out and about this Friday! Please don’t be offended if they can’t stop for long - we have a lot of entries to see right across the Dumfries boundary, so they’ll be on a tight schedule!

As judging is taking place on the final day of Dumfries Shine and our Shine Fest, the winners won’t be announced until next week.

🏆 Watch this space!

And once again, thank you to everyone who has taken part and helped make Dumfries bloom and shine. 💐💛

⚽🔥 MEET OOR LADY FLORENCE DIXIE 🔥⚽

Writer. Traveller. War Correspondent. Feminist. Political thinker. Women’s Football Pioneer.

And Dumfriesshire born and bred.

Born Florence Caroline Douglas at Cummertrees in 1855, Lady Florence Dixie was a spectacular force of nature who repeatedly refused Victorian expectations of how women should dress, behave, work, travel - or take up space in the world.

And, of course, she believed women should play football…

In 1895, Florence became President of the newly formed British Ladies’ Football Club - one of Britain’s earliest organised women’s football clubs. She championed practical clothing for the players and argued that football should be every bit as natural a game for women / girls, as for men / boys... and for everyone in between.

But football is only one doorway into Florence’s utterly extraordinary life…

She travelled through Patagonia, wrote Sci-Fi novels imagining radically different futures for women (ie they got the right to vote!), worked as a war correspondent in southern Africa, campaigned for women’s rights and continually defied the gender conventions of her time.
She was also the Aunt of Oscar Wilde’s Bosie (Lord Alfred Douglas)

THIS is why we love a catalyst character. 🔎

One local life can open up whole hidden worlds of history - women’s football, gender, clothing, sport, sexuality, politics, power, feminism, travel, empire and whose stories we choose to remember.

And Florence is only the beginning…

Through Queens of the Pitch, run in partnership with QueenoftheSouth FC our Community Co-Curators will follow her onto the football field - and onwards through generations of women and girls who played, organised, supported and fought for their place in the game.

⚽ Oor Lady Florence is coming Out of the Archives, and we suspect she has quite a lot to say!

Part of Pride of Place: Dumfries - Out of the Archives, developed by DJ McDowall The Imaginarium with Arts D&G and Dumfries and Galloway Heritage Service

Queens of the Pitch is supported by Dumfries Town Board through their Pride in Place funding, with Dumfries Museum
