🌳✨ A Step Back in Time at Ewart Library! ✨🌳

We were delighted to welcome Primary 4 pupils from Loreburn Primary School to the Heritage Department at Ewart Library last month!

During their visit, the children explored a fascinating range of historical resources, including old photographs, showing just how much Dumfries has changed over the years. They also had the chance to look through school logbooks from 100 years ago—sparking lots of curiosity about what school life was like in the past—and even browsed historic newspapers 🔎

With Primary 4 currently learning about William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, the visit was perfectly timed. It was wonderful to help bring their studies to life by exploring some of the rich historical connections right here in our local area.

Thank you to the pupils and staff from Loreburn for such an enthusiastic visit—we hope you enjoyed your time discovering Dumfries’ past as much as we enjoyed hosting you! 📖

📚✨ A Fantastic Visit from Strathclyde University! ✨📚

We were delighted to welcome an enthusiastic group of Strathclyde University students and a PhD researcher, to the Heritage Service last week. A huge thank you to Matt Smith and Hannah Proctor for organising the visit and bringing such an engaged cohort.

During their time with us, the students explored a fascinating selection of material from the Crichton Royal Hospital Archives, including:
🗂️ Admission registers listing details including admission dates, causes of condition, length of stay, home town
📄 Patient case books detailing patient history, health conditions and treatments
📘 Annual Reports detailing numbers of patients, occupations within the Crichton, hospital development
📰 New Moon patient magazine, written by patients
🎭 Dr Easterbrook’s Scrapbook, capturing the importance the hospital placed on arts, music, drama and creative expression

After their research session, the group continued to the Crichton Estate for a tour of its remarkable grounds and buildings.
We hope the visit has sparked ideas for dissertation case studies and inspired future research into the rich history of the Crichton!

Thank you again to everyone involved — we loved hosting you! 👋✨

📚❄ The Big Snow – Help Us Preserve Your Memories! ❄📚

The BBC news coverage of The Big Snow features images from our Heritage Service Photograph Collections!!!

We know how powerful these moments of shared experience can be and how important it is to preserve them for the future.

We are continuing to build the photograph collection documenting local life, weather events, and the stories that shape our region.

🌨 We’d love your help!
If you captured photos of The Big Snow in 1996 — whether it’s snowy streets, garden drifts, community efforts, or simply your own view from home — please consider sharing them with us. Your images can become part of our permanent archive, safeguarding today’s memories for tomorrow’s researchers, families, and historians.

📩 How to contribute:
Just send us a message here, or email your photos to [email protected] with a brief note about where they were taken and who took the photo.

Let’s make sure this extraordinary winter moment becomes part of our shared story. ❄📸

The Roper family will never forget the heaviest February snowfall on record in south-west Scotland.
