Before Dudley Castle became the moody, magnificent ruin we all adore ๐ŸŒ…, it belonged to a world where kings stuck their noses into everything ๐Ÿ‘‘, nobles argued like toddlers ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ, and marriage was basically a medieval hostage negotiation ๐Ÿ’โžก๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

Into this delightful chaos steps ๐‘๐จ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐๐ž ๐•๐ž๐ซ๐๐ฎ๐งโ€” a woman who didnโ€™t just survive medieval lifeโ€ฆ she outโ€‘bossed it ๐Ÿ’…โš”๏ธ.

Born into serious power, Rohese was married off young in a classic political alliance ๐Ÿค โ€” and hereโ€™s where Dudley enters the chat ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฐ.

Her first husband was ๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜†, soon to be Baron Dudley

This marriage plugged Rohese straight into the Dudley lordship network, making her part of the same noble web that shaped our castleโ€™s early medieval story ๐Ÿงตโœจ.

Together, they had a son: ๐—ก๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜†.
He inheritedโ€ฆ and then vanished.
No records.
No charters.
No land transfers.
No โ€œhe diedโ€ note.
Just p**f โ€” medieval disappearing act ๐Ÿซฅ๐Ÿ’จ.

With William gone and Nicholas missing from history, Rohese found herself widowed, powerful, and still tied to Dudleyโ€™s noble sphere.

Cue Husband #2: ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ โ€” an Irish political heavyweight ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช.

This marriage was a political upgrade, a dynastyโ€‘level allianceโ€ฆ and she had children

And hereโ€™s the part that makes historians blink twice ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ:

Her children with Theobald kept HER name โ€” de Verdun โ€” not his.

Medieval life expectancy was still โ€œgood luckโ€ ๐Ÿ€, and Theobald also died โ€” leaving Rohese twice widowed, twice politically upgraded, and sitting on enough land to make the Crown twitch ๐Ÿ‘€.

And twitch it DID.

Because a twiceโ€‘widowed heiress with estates across England AND Ireland was basically medieval TNT ๐Ÿ’ฃ.

So naturally, the king tried to pick her a third husband like he was choosing a new court jester ๐Ÿคก.
Roheseโ€™s response?
A medieval โ€œabsolutely notโ€ ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ.

She marched up to the Crown, dropped 700 marks ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ like she was paying for VIP seats at a jousting tournament ๐Ÿ‡, and declared herself legally independent. No husband. No royal meddling. No drama she didnโ€™t personally approve ๐Ÿ˜Œ.

From that moment on, Rohese wasnโ€™t just an heiress โ€” she was a ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ, running her lands with the confidence of someone who could silence a room just by raising an eyebrow ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ.

And trust usโ€ฆ this is only the warmโ€‘up ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

Noble followers, history gremlins, castle lurkers and lovers of medieval chaos ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฐ โ€” gather round.

This morning, at 7:00, we unleash a brandโ€‘new series: Hidden Faces of Dudley Castle.

For centuries, Dudley Castle has been associated with the big names โ€” the lords, the ladies, the rebels, the royals. But behind every political meltdown, every land dispute, every dramatic medieval tantrumโ€ฆ there were people whose stories were just as wild, powerful, and downright iconic.

And weโ€™re kicking things off with a woman who didnโ€™t just bend the medieval rulebook โ€” she snapped it clean in half ๐Ÿ’…โš”๏ธ.

A woman tied directly into the Dudley noble network through her first husband ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿฐ.

A woman who levelled up politically through her second husband ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช.

A woman who looked at the Crownโ€™s attempt to control her life and said,

โ€œAbsolutely not, babesโ€ ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฐ.A woman who built a fortress.

Founded a priory.
Defied kings.

And may or may not have yeeted a mason out of a window (allegedly) ๐ŸชŸ๐Ÿช‚๐Ÿ˜ฑ.

And she is the perfect storm to begin this series.

Later this morning at 7:00, Part One drops โ€” the marriages, the drama, the power moves, the sass
Tomorrow,

Part Two brings the castle, the legends, and the chaos.
Sharpen your quills.
Brace your goblets.
The Hidden Faces are rising.

Nicholas de Somery wasnโ€™t just small.
He was historically catastrophic.

Born before 1222, probably at Dudley Castle, probably already judging everyone around him like a medieval toddlerโ€‘tyrant, Nicholas arrived with one job:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Be the heir.
And honestly?
He barely managed that.

Henry IIIโ€™s admin team ran Dudley Castle for seven years with the enthusiasm of a wet parchment.

Nicholas?

A tiny heir.
A medieval loading screen.
A placeholder with a pulse.

No dramatic medieval scandal.

Just a tiny blip in the records that detonates the entire succession.

๐Ÿฐ Wanted: Copy of โ€œSutton and Ward Families: A Brief History of the Baroniesโ€ by David Padgett

Weโ€™re hoping to find or purchase a copy of this genealogical booklet compiled by David Padgett (copyright August 2009).

It explores the Ward and Sutton (Dudley) families, their baronies, heraldry, and biographies of notable figures including John Ward, William Humble Ward, and Lord Ward-Atherton.

If anyone has a copy or knows where one might be available, please get in touch!

This is a fascinating piece of Dudleyโ€™s noble heritage, and weโ€™d love to preserve and share it with our community.

Not only have we stormed the gates โ€” weโ€™ve taken the keep, raided the pantry, befriended the ghosts, and declared ourselves the rightful rulers of the Facebook realm.
Because todayโ€ฆ
โœจ Friends of Dudley Castle has officially hit 3,000 followers. โœจThree. Thousand

Thatโ€™s enough people to form:
A small medieval army
A very confused militia of peasants armed with pitchforks

A queue for the castle cafรฉ that stretches back to 1587

A crowd large enough to summon at least five ghosts and one disgruntled Tudor noble

You champions of heritage.
You connoisseurs of chaos.
You keep this page alive, loud, and delightfully unhinged โ€” just as Dudley Castle deserves.

Every like, every comment, every

"OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE,โ€
every ghost story, every meme....
It all helps to build this wild, wonderful community that celebrates the castleโ€™s history, humour, and occasional hauntings.

Sound the horns, rattle the portcullis, and someone please hold my mead โ€” because the Guild of St Edmunds are invading Dudley Castle & Zoo next weekend, and weโ€™re sharing this like the gossiping medieval town criers we absolutely are.

Theyโ€™re bringing artefacts you can touch, which is frankly outrageous behaviour.

Youโ€™ll be able to pick things up, poke them, ask questions, and pretend youโ€™re moments away from being drafted into a crusade.

History?
Weโ€™re not just learning it โ€” weโ€™re manhandling it.

Then thereโ€™s combat displays, where grown adults voluntarily get hit with historically accurate enthusiasm.

And archery demonstrations, because nothing says โ€œeducational family day outโ€ like watching someone fire pointy sticks at targets while explaining feudal tax law.

For the tiny humans, thereโ€™s haveโ€‘aโ€‘go archery, so they can live out their miniature Robin Hood fantasies without accidentally starting a rebellion.
Bless them.

So โ€” grab your cloak, grab your curiosity, grab your nan if sheโ€™s game, grab your emotional support dragon, grab whatever isnโ€™t nailed down โ€” and march yourself up to the castle.we will absolutely be cheering from the sidelines like overcaffeinated medieval hypeโ€‘goblins.

Hope we see some of you there
