On 31 May 2007, my dear friend Sarah Beckinsale passed away very suddenly due to a heart defect. We were in our early 20s and her passing rocked us all hugely.

The one positive I always take from this sad story is that the people she loved have remained close ever since. This year Sarah’s sister and father donated aspen and willow grown in the nursery which and I planted on Argaty yesterday in her memory. May they outlive all of us.

We all have opinions about nature. And we should.

Our very existence depends on the complex living systems that make up our world.

So why is nature’s future so contested?

Charlotte Maddix is calling on Scottish Government to convene a National Landscape Resilience Summit, bringing together land managers, emergency services, conservationists, communities and policy makers to pool our knowledge.

We need an honest, practical conversation that turns collective expertise into a joined up plan that protects people and landscapes now, while building greater resilience for the future.
