Public Health Dorset

Public Health Dorset Part of Dorset and BCP Councils working to improve and protect health and reducing health inequalities.

We are the public health service supporting BCP Council and Dorset Council. Councils now have a legal duty to improve the health and wellbeing of residents and to reduce the differences in health outcomes between populations they serve. Public Health Dorset commissions a range of mandatory and non-mandatory public health services, including health improvement, the NHS Health Checks programme, sexu

al health services, children and young people and drug and alcohol services. We are also responsible for assurance of a wide range of screening and vaccination programmes, and for making sure the county is prepared in the event of a public health emergency like an outbreak of infectious diseases or major flooding. We serve a diverse population of 750,000 covering rural and urban areas, some of which are among the most deprived in the South West of England. Our page features a variety of information on health and wellbeing advice, support and updates to services to keep people informed and protected in Dorset. Social media is not the quickest way to get in touch with us. If you want to find the answer to a question or tell us something, please email [email protected]. There’s been a change in how public health services are delivered across Dorset.

Public health services are now managed by:
•BCP Council – Public Health and Communities Directorate
•Dorset Council – Public Health and Prevention Directorate

This follows the planned separation of the shared Public Health Dorset service.

This page will be deactivated on 31 July 2025. For the latest updates, health tips, and local wellbeing news, make sure you're following the main council accounts:

Starting 1st April 2025, public health services across Dorset will be managed by the Public Health and Communities Team at BCP Council and the Public Health and Prevention Team at Dorset Council. This change follows the agreed separation of Public Health Dorset as a shared service.

We’re taking a break from Facebook whilst we carry out some strategic work on our social media audiences and objectives. Thank you for your patience.

We commission the Reach Out project which helps people experiencing homelessness with drug and alcohol issues to access tailored treatment. This also includes those at risk of homelessness.

The team is made up of local organisations, working together for residents across Dorset. 💙

REACH OUT

Thank you to colleagues from Shelter, The Bus Shelter Dorset, REACH, Julian House and Public Health Dorset who came to Hope House today to discuss our project. REACH Out is a drug and alcohol project aimed at supporting people experiencing homelessness with workers embedded in local organisations. Treatment is tailored to the individual.

We decide everything together 🤝🙌 no decision being made outside of the meetings we have. Collaboration is the only way and something the Lantern has delivered for over 40 years.

Congratulations Emma and Claire and the Infant Feeding Team, this is fantastic news 👏

A baby's feeding journey is important for their future health and development. This amazing team ensure those who have just had a baby receive the best possible support and experience with feeding their baby and help to build close and loving relationships 🤱

Congratulations to Emma Barrett and Claire Williams from our Infant Feeding team for achieving Stage 2 of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Accreditation! 👶

The initiative is designed to provide parents with the best possible care to build close and loving relationships with their baby and to feed their baby in ways which will support optimum health and development.

The recent assessment highlighted the knowledge and skill of our maternity staff in implementing baby friendly standards and supporting mothers in bonding with their baby.

A fantastic achievement! 🎉

Yesterday, March 12th, we celebrated No Smoking Day, marking a year since the launch of our Swap 2 Stop initiative in Dorset.

Swap 2 Stop has offered people a greater chance of quitting smoking by providing a v**e starter kit and support from LiveWell Dorset.

Since the launch, 14,801 regulated v**e starter kits have been provided to eligible, ID-verified adults over 18. And 3,562 people reported that they were smoke-free at 4 weeks which is fantastic 👏

Well done to everyone who has swapped to va**ng to stop smoking through Swap 2 Stop. Quitting isn't easy, but with the right support, you can do it 💪

Remember, va**ng isn’t entirely risk-free, so if you don’t smoke, don’t v**e.

Nearly three-quarters of children and young people are now receiving the HPV vaccination 🌟

If you receive a consent form from your child's school, remember to sign it and return it. Don't let them miss out on getting long lasting protection against cervical cancer and several other types of cancer. The HPV vaccination is one dose, offered in school to all children and young people in Year 8. Read more about the importance of the HPV vaccination via the link in the comments👇
