The results are in for wing athletics 2026.

On 16 May 2026, the squadron took part in the wing athletics competition. The results are now in, and the cadets came 3rd overall in under-16 men, and 4th overall out of the 33 squadrons in the wing, which is a great result.

Special mention goes to Sgt Maulson, who managed the team while the staff in attendance were assigned other duties, ensuring no one missed an event and that the other cadets were supported throughout the day.

Some of the cadets will now go on to represent the wing in the inter-region athletics competition next month!

PROMOTION ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great pleasure that 1053 Armthorpe Squadron can announce that after an application process, a presentation to wing staff, and a selection board interview, Flight Sergeant Lacey has been promoted to Cadet Warrant Officer.

This promotion reflects a great deal of commitment, leadership, and dedication to both the squadron and the RAFAC over many years in the organisation. CWO Lacey has always strived to embody the core values of the RAFAC and has always given his best effort in everything he does.

He also has recently passed the fundamentals of coaching course which enables a cadet to assist on live fire ranges under supervision coaching other cadets as well as cadet force adult volunteers to improve in their shooting skills.

Cadets are taught weapon handling skills as part of a structured programme of supervised training that emphasises safe and responsible use.

Congratulations Cadet Warrant Officer Lacey

End of an Era

After more than a decade of leadership, 1053 (Armthorpe) Squadron bids farewell to a Commanding Officer who transformed opportunity for generations of cadets. 1053 (Armthorpe) Squadron of the RAF Air Cadets proudly recognises the outstanding service of Flight Lieutenant Robert Wenban B.Ed (Hons) MInstLM RAFAC as he steps down as Commanding Officer after more than a decade in post, transferring to 2008 (Bawtry) Squadron as a Squadron Officer.

“Flt Lt Wenban’s leadership has shaped generations of cadets at 1053 Squadron. His commitment, energy and belief in young people have left a lasting legacy that will continue long into the future.”

Cadet Foundations and Early Achievement
Flight Lieutenant Wenban’s journey began in the 1980s at 1053 Squadron, where he rose to the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer, the highest achievable cadet rank.

During his cadet career, he achieved the Staff Cadet qualification, RAF Marksman proficiency, and the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, presented at St James’s Palace. His training included extensive weapons handling across multiple platforms, firing both indoor and outdoor ranges including Totley and Bisley.

His aviation experience included Air Experience Flights in aircraft such as the Chipmunk and Jetstream, alongside helicopter flights in the Gazelle and Sea King. Toward the end of his cadet career, he qualified as a Glider Pilot following a winter course at RAF Syerston.

He also attended numerous RAF camps, including RAF Boulmer, Cosford, Binbrook, Shawbury and Henlow, gaining early exposure to RAF life.

Sporting Excellence and Development
Sport played a defining role in his cadet experience. He represented the squadron and Wing across athletics, cross country, football, swimming and rugby union. His achievements included multiple Wing titles in Shot Putt and Discus, earning a Wing Blue, and captaining the Wing to victory at the North Region Athletics Competition (1987). He went on to compete at the Corps National Finals at RAF Cosford, earning a Regional Blue. In rugby union, he led the Wing team as a pack leader, securing victory at North Region level and earning the Player of the Final award.

Return to 1053 and Rise to Command
In 2013, Mr Wenban returned to 1053 Squadron as a Civilian Instructor, driven by a desire to give back. He quickly progressed through roles including Training Officer and Adjutant. Following successful completion of his Commissioning Board and training at RAF Cranwell, he was appointed as a RAF VR(T) Pilot Officer in 2014, later transitioning to a RAF Air Cadets commission. He subsequently completed the Squadron Commanders’ Course and was appointed Commanding Officer, bringing with him a clear vision to raise standards and expand opportunity.

Transformational Leadership and Lasting Impact
From the outset, Flight Lieutenant Wenban significantly enhanced the squadron’s training programme, introducing a structured and ambitious annual plan that remains in place today. Under his leadership, 1053 Squadron not only expanded its activity and participation but strengthened cadet progression, retention and achievement—creating pathways into the Armed Forces and wider careers. For many cadets, he has been the defining influence of their time in the RAF Air Cadets.

Expanding Opportunity: Sport, Activities and Adventure
A hallmark of his leadership was the introduction of consistent, high-quality opportunities. Monthly Sports Nights and Activity Nights ensured cadets experienced a wide and inclusive programme, including ice skating, archery, football, climbing, karting, adventure training and more. As a qualified lifeguard and swimming coach, he ensured cadets consistently achieved Corps Swimming Proficiency awards at all levels.

His philosophy remained clear: cadets should experience a programme that is engaging, inclusive and aspirational.

Wing Contribution and Competitive Success
Beyond the squadron, Flight Lieutenant Wenban played an active role across the Wing, supporting competitions and coaching teams. He contributed as a swimming timekeeper, rugby coach, athletics official and competition organiser. Under his leadership, the squadron achieved significant success, including winning the Overall Wing Athletics Competition twice, alongside multiple competition wins across disciplines.

Community Engagement and Fundraising
The squadron strengthened its presence within the community, raising thousands of pounds annually for charities including the Royal British Legion, Royal Air Forces Association, RAF Benevolent Fund and Comic Relief. Activities included community events, public engagement, fundraising initiatives and civic support, significantly enhancing the squadron’s local profile and relationships.

Resilience Through COVID-19
One of the defining periods of his leadership came during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many units struggled, 1053 Squadron continued to operate through twice-weekly virtual parade nights, online training and Wing-wide engagement. He then led the safe and structured reopening of the squadron. This period demonstrated not just resilience—but strong, adaptive leadership.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Personal Development
A passionate advocate of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Flight Lieutenant Wenban expanded participation significantly. Cadets achieved awards at all levels, including Gold Awards celebrated at Buckingham Palace and Holyrood. The squadron was recognised with the Wing DofE Engagement Trophy. He personally led and assessed over 50 expeditions, ensuring cadets gained valuable life skills, resilience and confidence.

Specialist Training and Skills Development
Flight Lieutenant Wenban promoted the development of practical and life skills across multiple areas. Cadets accessed opportunities in first aid, aviation, cyber, radio communications, leadership and BTEC qualifications. Many achieved advanced qualifications and national-level recognition. He enabled participation in elite opportunities including QAIC, aviation training, road marching and competitive shooting, with cadets achieving success at Wing and national levels.

Leadership, Progression and Staff Development
A key part of his legacy is the development of people.
He supported cadets progressing to senior leadership roles, including Cadet Warrant Officer, and enabled staff to achieve RAFAC commissions and SNCO positions. Cadets and staff achieved recognition including Lord Lieutenant awards and International Air Cadet Exchange placements.

Ceremonial, Heritage and Squadron Development
Flight Lieutenant Wenban upheld and strengthened squadron traditions, including enrolment parades, graduation events and formal ceremonies.

He played a key role in establishing 558 (Finningley) Squadron, contributing to its formation and success, and strengthening wider cadet provision in the area.

He also enhanced squadron identity through initiatives such as the Merlin Canteen and alumni engagement.

Camps, Events and Representation
Cadets accessed a wide range of camps and experiences, including RAF station camps, adventure training, leadership and music camps.

Flight Lieutenant Wenban also served as Camp Commandant and supported Wing-level delivery, ensuring high-quality experiences across the organisation.

Remembrance, Service and Public Duties
He led the squadron in numerous ceremonial duties, including Remembrance parades, funerals and commemorative events, always delivered with professionalism, dignity and respect. The squadron also played a prominent role in public events, Armed Forces Day parades and regional engagement.

Recognition and Professional Development
His dedication has been recognised through:
- Two RAF Air Cadet Commendations
- Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal
- King’s Coronation Medal

He has completed extensive qualifications across expedition leadership, instructional delivery, first aid, shooting, fire risk management, aviation and specialist training—demonstrating a sustained commitment to enabling opportunity for cadets.

A Lasting Legacy
A former RAF officer and lifelong martial artist, Flight Lieutenant Wenban has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the development of young people. He has given countless hours to support cadets, staff and the wider organisation. He leaves behind a squadron that is stronger, more ambitious and better connected than ever before. His legacy is not only in the programmes he developed, but in the people he inspired and the opportunities he created.

A Final Thank You
Flight Lieutenant Wenban has been more than a Commanding Officer—he has been a mentor, leader and role model to generations.

On behalf of everyone at 1053 (Armthorpe) Squadron:
Thank you for your exceptional service.
We wish you every success in your future within the RAF Air Cadets.

1053 (Armthorpe) Squadron RAF Air Cadets would like to wish Cadet Sergeant Alexander Jacobs all the very best for the future as he ‘Ages Out’ on his 18th birthday.

Cadet Sergeant Jacobs states, “Moving to this squadron has been an unbelievable journey and being a member of 1053 Squadron has allowed me to grow as a person in ways I never thought possible. As my 18th birthday approaches and exams loom it is upsetting that I have decided to age out upon my 18th birthday on the 29th April. My final decision stems from a combination of leaving the staff cadet process a bit too late, school and educational work, job shifts and after talking with my parents coming to the realisation that moving on from the organisation that has been my home for the past four years is the right thing to do. I love this organisation and although I did not start my journey at 1053 I am so happy to leave with the memories of my time there. At 1053 I have strengthened my ability and confidence to lead such as through having the honour of being a Junior C-Flight Instructor. My time teaching the new cadets seemed a perfect way to find closure in an organisation like this and the graduation parade was a proud moment for me personally. I would like to thank Flt Lt Robert Wenban who has been a role model to me and like many others on the squadron and I am sure in the core has inspired us to go above and beyond in everything we do. I move on to exams and hopefully university where I am preparing an application to the UAS. I will look fondly on the organisation and especially 1053. Staff and cadets are the framework on which the squadron operates and it is an honour to have been a part of something like this.”

Cadet Sergeant Jacobs took the Final Parade and spoke to everyone explaining that he has enjoyed his time with the squadron. He went on to state that cadets should sign up to activities, even ones that they don't particularly know anything about. He did an Adventure Training Camp and absolutely loved it. He went on to thank Squadron Leader Owen and Flight Lieutenant's Lambert and Wenban for being role models to him.
