80 years of adoption — and still learning

Adoption has a long and complex history, and it hasn’t always looked the way it does today. Over time, understanding has grown about children’s needs, trauma, identity and lifelong connections.

At Yorkshire Adoption Agency, we’re proud to be rated Ofsted Outstanding — not because adoption is simple, but because modern adoption requires care, reflection and constant learning.

Outstanding practice means:
- putting children’s needs first
- preparing adopters honestly and realistically
- offering lifelong support, not just at placement
- listening carefully — to children, families and professionals
- never standing still

Our Community In-reach Project to support finding homes for Black children who wait the longest is one example of our commitment to our Outstanding practice.

Our recent partnership with has been an invaluable addition to this project with some fantastic work being completed by our Community Research Link Workers.

Hi I am Gina, YAA's LGBTQ+ Champion, and I have been with the agency for 18 years.

Same-sex and unmarried couples have legally been able to adopt since the changes to the Adoption and Children Act 2002 came into effect in 2005.

This means LGBTQ+ parents have the same legal parental rights as anyone else who adopts a child to grow their family.

As YAA's LGBTQ+ Champion, it is my role to ensure that all our LGBTQ+ families feel accepted and supported throughout their adoption journey.

To do this, we ensure that we have the right structures in place to help staff and volunteers do this and that all our services are inclusive.

Learn more about LGBTQ+ adoption on our website or contact us to speak to one of our friendly team!

A child's wellbeing is shaped by love, support and acceptance, not by the structure of their family.

There is no single blueprint for a family.

We welcome enquiries from people of all backgrounds and communities.

Could you provide a loving home for a child waiting for their forever family?

Hi I am Lois and have been at YAA for 4 years.

We know that a child's wellbeing is shaped by the quality of their relationships with their caregivers, not by whether they are raised by a mum and dad, two mums, two dads, or a single parent.

When children feel safe, loved, accepted, and understood, they can thrive.

For adoptive families, building trust and connection is at the heart of parenting. It's the everyday moments of love, comfort, encouragement, and belonging that help children grow in confidence and feel secure.

This month and every month, we celebrate the many different ways families are formed and recognise the strengths that diversity brings to our adoption community.
