This is not a pity party for me far from it. But to all the trolls and keyboard warriors, how very short sighted some of you really are.
I very rarely use social media to defend myself personally because public life comes with scrutiny and I accept that. But the vile comments being made are not about my role as a councillor. They are personal attacks aimed directly at me as a person.
The image being circulated is from over six years ago whilst I was undergoing cancer treatment and taking steroids as part of that treatment. It was an extremely private and difficult time in my life. I never publicly spoke about it, never sought sympathy and never stopped working for my ward and community throughout it all.
What disappoints me most is how easily people judge without knowing the reality behind a photograph. The image itself is also distorted and angled in a way to make me appear bigger than I actually was and is not an accurate representation of me at all. It was taken during a period of illness and treatment, not during normal day to day life.
I am disgusted by some of the vile comments people have chosen to make. At the same time, to those who have shown kindness, decency and support, thank you. It has not gone unnoticed.
Please also remember that many of the people I help and support do not even have the resources or circumstances to vote. But regardless of that, I will always continue to put my community first because that is who I am.
I will continue to do good work out there for the people of Dewsbury. I will also continue advocating for Dewsbury Cares and working alongside them, doing what I have always done putting the community first.
I have never exploited vulnerable people in their moments of crisis by posting videos or photographs of them online for clicks, attention or praise for myself. I have never used my role as a councillor for personal gain, fundraising publicity or click bait. My work is discreet not asking for any payments.
Politics is one thing. Humanity and decency is another.
Many of you form an opinion of me and believe you know my story. But you do not. I hold that piece of the jigsaw. Should you want a discussion feel free to contact me.
It’s not over. Keep watching this space.
