What a day at the Waterside Half Marathon 🏃‍♂️‍➡️

Yesterday, the Foyle Hospice cheer station was positioned just below the Hospice on the route, with our staff and volunteers out in full voice to support every runner passing by.

We were delighted to be joined by teacher Ciara McCallion and Head Boy Ben Curran from St Joseph's Boys' School, with our cheer station brightened up by posters made Olly and Noah from their Good Deeds Council.

There were so many smiles in the crowd and so much determination on the road, from first-time half marathon runners to seasoned pros. It was also wonderful to see people running for Foyle Hospice and for so many other fantastic charities.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped, waved, smiled, cheered, volunteered, supported or ran. Days like this show the very best of our community!!

Good Grief is opening up important conversations about death, loss and grief

Young people who have accessed Youthlife and Foyle Hospice services have come together to devise a special performance, funded by Hospice UK, sharing their personal stories and experiences in a brave, creative and honest way.

At the heart of the performance is Camp Cairn, a fictional campsite at the foot of a mountain that can only be reached through loss. Each traveller arrives by a different path, carrying their own memories, belongings and experience of grief.

The story is inspired by the meaning of a cairn — stones left along a route to help others find their way. In Good Grief, it becomes a reminder that while nobody can walk the journey of grief for someone else, others have walked similar paths before.

It has been a real privilege for Foyle Hospice to be involved in this project, and we are so proud of the young people who have helped shape it, including designing the poster themselves.

The performance takes place at New Gate Theatre this weekend 12th September.

Today marks the launch of Palliative Care Week.

This year’s theme is Palliative Care: It’s not what you think, helping challenge some of the misunderstanding that still exists around palliative care.

Palliative care is not only about end of life. It is about helping people with life-limiting conditions live as well as possible, with support for their physical, emotional, social and practical needs.

It is care for the person, and support for the family too.

At Foyle Hospice, we see every day the difference palliative care can make, whether that care is provided in our Inpatient Unit, through our Community Care Team, Day Therapy, advice line, counselling or family support services.

This week, we’ll be helping raise awareness of what palliative care really means, and why it matters for local patients, families and carers across our community.

We try to support as many people as possible through our Day Therapy service, and sometimes that support starts before someone even arrives at Foyle Hospice.

Our volunteer bus service is able to help some patients travel to and from Day Therapy, making it easier for more people to access the care, company and support available here.

For some, that journey means getting out of the house. For others, it means staying connected, enjoying time with others, and being able to attend without the worry of transport.

We are so thankful to have this service, and even more thankful for the volunteers who give their time to make it possible.

Their kindness helps us reach more people, support more families, and make Day Therapy more accessible for patients across our community.
