City Centre Initiative (CCI) was established in April 2000 as a partnership between the private and public sectors. The Company’s key objective is to maintain the city as clean, safe and friendly and works with partners and stakeholders, such as Derry City Council, Department for Social Development, PSNI and the private sector to do this. CCI believe in a partnership approach for the effective man

agement of its core area. CCI is the dedicated town centre management organisation for the City of Derry-Londonderry and was established to develop, manage and initiate a number of projects designed to promote the commercial vitality and viability of the city centre. CCI’s Board is currently made up of representatives from the public and private sector. Core funders for CCI are Derry City Council, (DCC), Department for Social Development, (DSD), and the Police Service Northern Ireland, (PSNI). Our City has a rich cultural heritage and with a strong vision for the future Derry-Londonderry must ensure that our city centre is well-placed to meet the demands of its residents, business community and visitors and can respond to the challenges of being Northern Ireland’s ‘second city’. A strong city centre management organisation that can engage all members of the city centre community presents therefore real opportunities for Derry-Londonderry.

We were thrilled to celebrate the winners of this year’s City Centre Initiative Floral Competition at the Guildhall last week.

Hosted by Deputy Mayor Catherine McDaid in the Mayor’s Parlour, the prizegiving recognised the top green thumbed local businesses and residents who have dedicated their time and expertise to brightening up the city centre and their neighbourhoods.

A extra special shoutout goes to Jim & Maureen Nelis, who received a Special Award from Derry City and Strabane District Council for their stunning work on Abercorn Terrace. They have transformed their street into a wonderful display of colour which has not only enhanced the area, but has also become something of a tourist attraction, with international visitors from as far afield as Japan, the USA, and Australia visiting and photographing their displays.

Our wardens were delighted to complete this small area of work this morning, assisting one city centre resident with tidying up their outdoor seating area.

Not something we would normally do, however when the Derry Walls takes up a large portion of that area - we couldn't wait to get at it!

Over the last few weeks we completed assessment, treatment and finally today, the removal of weeds from this wee hidden gem nestled down outside Hangman's Bastion.

Just in time to catch some rays this afternoon and admire the beautiful clean stonework ⚒️🌱🌿

The CCI Floral Competition judges were treated to a wonderful display of colour, creativity and community spirit as we visited entrants across the city yesterday!

Each year, we are amazed by the dedication, hard work and commitment that goes into every entry, and we truly appreciate the effort made to help enhance both the city centre and communities across the city.

One of the most striking and inspiring aspects of the judging process was hearing directly from participants about the positive impact gardening and floral creativity have had on their lives. Many spoke about the benefits for mental health and wellbeing, while others highlighted how their projects have strengthened community involvement, bringing neighbours, colleagues and volunteers together through a shared passion for making their area a brighter and more welcoming place.

A huge thank you to everyone who entered, and congratulations to all of our finalists:

We're a bit late with our Derry Walls annual vegetation control update🪴 but... a big thank you once again to our three wardens wardens Niall, Brian, Garvin... and Jim for their hard work and early morning starts... so far this year 👏 😍

These works take place annually, throughout the year on behalf of and under the guidance of the Historic Environment Division's vegetation management advice for Derry Walls and DAERA's compliance orders. With Derry Walls being such a vast space, these works can seasons to fully complete.

The primary aim of the work is protect the integrity of the structure from invasive and damaging species such as Buddleia (more commonly known as Butterfly Bush) and also involves the removal of annual weeds and grasses to improve safety and the visual impact of the historic monument.

A big thank you to residents living near the Walls, Principal Doherty from Longtower School, Parkes Hire and of course DCSDC's cleansing team for their assistance.

Entries for the CCI Floral Competition close this Friday, 31st July 2026. Whether you have a massive garden or a small cosy corner, we want to see how you bring our city to life!

We’re looking for entries of all shapes and sizes across these categories:

🌸 City Centre Businesses: Show off your creative flair! Brighten up your shop frontage or window displays with fresh, flowering plants to welcome shoppers.

🌸 Residential: Small or large gardens, backyards, or balcony corners - if it’s spectacular and full of life, our judges want to see it!

🌸 Large Gardens (Churches, Hotels, Residential Homes, etc.): Show us your most colourful floral beds, statement pots, and impressive green spaces.

Who can enter? Absolutely everyone!
