Wings Week 09-15 September 2026

The Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Flag has been raised in Dereham to mark Wings Week.

The aim of the Wings Appeal and Wings Week is to raise vital funds to support serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families.
The Royal Air Force Association are dependent on the generosity of the public and the selfless hard work of their volunteers, who help raise vital funds for the Wings Appeal.

King Charles III Accession Day - 08 September 2026

The Union Flag is flying in Dereham to mark His Majesty The King’s Accession Day.

This day marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III in 2022.

God save the King!

Merchant Navy Day - 03 September 2026

The Union Flag and the Red Ensign Flag have been raised in Dereham to mark Merchant Navy Day.

Merchant Navy Day in the UK falls on 03 September, marking the anniversary of the sinking of the first British merchant ship, the SS Athenia, in 1939.

On Merchant Navy Day we honour and remember the many sacrifices of Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept the country's supply lines open during the two World Wars, as well as recognising and appreciating those who have served since, and showing support for future seafarers on which the UK depends.

NOTICE OF CO-OPTION OF ONE TOWN COUNCILLOR

The Electoral Services Department of Breckland District Council has confirmed that the regulation 10 requests from electors have not been fulfilled and Dereham Town Council can now fill the vacancy by co-option.

If you are interested in serving as a Town Councillor, please write to the Town Clerk confirming that you are qualified to be a Councillor (see Appendix A of the Co-option procedure), include a brief explanation of why you are interested in joining the Town Council and what skills and experiences you will bring. The Council meets once a month on the second Tuesday in the month. If you would like to know more about the role, please contact the Clerk.

The closing date for written submissions of interest is 5th October 2026.

Candidates will be invited to speak at the Full Council meeting to be held on 13th October 2026 at 7.30pm at Dereham Memorial Hall, after which a vote by Councillors will take place. Full details of the process can be found in the Co-option Procedure.

After a meeting with the organiser, Dereham Town Council would like to advise that the planned Palestine Vigil at the Dereham War Memorial, originally set for Saturday 15 August 2026, will not be taking place.

Proposed Vigil and Dereham War Memorial

With regards to the proposed Vigil for Palestine. The Town Council would like to reassure Dereham residents that the Council has not given consent for this vigil to take place, we have notified the Police that there is no consent, and such a vigil is likely to be upsetting to many residents. We will also be trying to contact the organisers to make them aware that they do not have consent and instruct them to identify an alternative location.

The War Memorial serves the purpose of remembering and honouring those men and women from Dereham who gave their lives in the service of this Country, the Memorial is not there to make political statements. While many people will be sympathetic to the plight of Palestinians along with many other groups, the War Memorial is not the place for such a vigil and could be upsetting to many people in Dereham, and is likely to lead to people being less sympathetic to this particular cause.

VJ Day – 81st Anniversary
15th August 2026

The Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) Flag has been raised in Dereham in commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of VJ Day, for all those who served in the Far East during World War II.

Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the day Japan surrendered on 15th August 1945, effectively ending the Second World War.

In the UK, it is officially observed on 15th August, reflecting the historic announcement broadcast, while the US officially commemorates the formal signing on 2nd September.

We will remember them.
