๐Ÿฆ– Thank you to everyone who joined us for Dereham Dino Day last week! ๐Ÿฆ•

It was fantastic to see so many families, residents, visitors, and dinosaur enthusiasts, coming together to enjoy a day packed with prehistoric fun in the heart of Dereham.

We're delighted to hear such positive feedback from those who attended: ๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ

"Dinosaurs are always popular and it was lovely for our staff to bring the children along and learn more about dinosaurs." โ€“ East Dereham Day Nursery

"Overall the day was joyous. Really lovely atmosphere and certainly doing things where there is no cost to visitors helps make things feel really inclusive." โ€“ Yellow Bus Events

A huge thank you to everyone and our partners ROARR and Yellow Bus Events who helped make the day such a success, and to the businesses who had a dino in their window for the trail. ๐Ÿฆ–

It's also been wonderful to hear from local businesses that they saw increased footfall and trade during the event, demonstrating the positive impact community events like this can have for our town centre. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Thank you as well to everyone who completed the trail. We'll be announcing the lucky winner soon, so keep an eye on our social media channels! ๐Ÿ‘€

We hope you had a roaring good time and look forward to seeing you at future events!

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธA number of car parks in have now been transferred from Breckland Council into the ownership of Thetford Town Council.

๐Ÿฅ‡Thetford is the first town to see car parks moved into the hands of the local town council, with car park transfers in , , and also progressing.

๐ŸคWe worked together to transfer the car parks in light of the Government's announcement that it plans to push ahead with Local Government Reorganisation, which is expected to see Breckland Council abolished in the next couple of years. Transferring the car parks to town councils now will ensure they remain in local control and continue to meet the needs of local communities and businesses.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธCllr Paul Hewett, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Property, Projects and Procurement, commented: "We are delighted to have successfully completed the transfer of car parks to Thetford Town Council. By working closely together we have ensured decisions about car parking provision will continue to be made as close to the community as possible. This will help to make sure this provision continues to meet the needs of our residents while also supporting local businesses to thrive."

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธCllr Vic Peters, Mayor of Thetford, added: "As the Mayor of Thetford, I am thrilled to see our town take ownership of these vital car parks. This transfer not only empowers us to better serve our community's needs but also strengthens our commitment to supporting local businesses. Together, we will ensure that our parking facilities are managed effectively and efficiently for the benefit of all residents and visitors, and that we fulfil our commitment that they remain free of charge for users."

Breckland Council is aware of ongoing speculation regarding the proposed regeneration of the Abbey Estate in Thetford and the planning application submitted by Bromford Flagship. This speculation led to a question at our most recent Full Council meeting, which was responded to by the Council's Leader, Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen.

We want to be absolutely clear about our position:

Following a robust and transparent democratic process, Breckland Council's Planning Committee considered extensive evidence from planning professionals, expert witnesses, key stakeholders and local residents before reaching its decision to refuse the application. That decision reflected the concerns raised by the community and was made in the best interests of Thetford and its residents.

The application has now been appealed and will be determined by the Planning Inspectorate later this year. Breckland Council will play a full and active role in those proceedings and will vigorously defend the decision reached by its democratically elected Planning Committee.

While the Council remains committed to supporting the regeneration and long-term prosperity of Thetford, including improvements to the Abbey Estate, regeneration must be delivered in a way that commands public confidence and respects local democratic decision-making.

It would be inappropriate to speculate on matters that are now subject to a formal appeals process. However, what we can say unequivocally is that Breckland Council stands by the decision that was made, stands with local residents who engaged in the process, and will continue to ensure that the voice of Thetford is heard throughout the appeal.
