This is absolutely devastating to hear and such a tragic reminder of the dangers of open water.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who has lost his life.

⚠️ No matter how tempting it may be to cool down in open water, please don’t! Rivers, lakes, reservoirs and quarry’s may look inviting but there are many hidden dangers.

🛟 If you do find yourself in difficulty in water, - float on your back with your head back and arms and legs out like a star. Calm your breathing and shout for help.

If you see someone in trouble. Please call 999 immediately - do not attempt a rescue yourself.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service

Emergency services were called to Balderton Lake, off Heron Way, New Balderton at 2.35pm on Thursday 28 May following reports a man had entered the water.

Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene and a 19-year-old man was recovered from the water. He had been at the lake with friends, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital.

We are sad to inform that he has not survived. His family have been informed and officers are supporting them at this deeply distressing time.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Chief Inspector for Newark, Clive Collings, said:

"This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are solely with this young man's family.

"We recognise this will be very upsetting for the local community and we encourage people to access support if they need it.

"During hot weather we know people want to keep cool but open waters are exceptionally dangerous as there is no way of telling what's beneath the surface."

Group Manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of this young man at this incredibly difficult time. This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.

“Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the dangers that open water can present. Even on warm and sunny days, water temperatures can be much colder than they appear, and entering the water can lead to cold water shock, which can be sudden, severe and potentially fatal.

“If you see someone in difficulty in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service. Encourage the person to float on their back to help them stay calm and conserve energy. For your own safety, please do not enter the water or attempt a rescue yourself, as this can put additional lives at risk.”

If you spot someone in open waters call 999 and provide the fire service with an accurate location using what3words or landmarks.

Firing up the BBQ at home?🍔☀️

To help prevent accidental fires and keep everyone safe, please remember:
✅ Keep BBQs well away from homes, fences, sheds and overhanging branches
✅ Never leave a BBQ unattended
✅ Keep children and pets at a safe distance
✅ Always have water or a bucket of sand nearby
✅ Make sure BBQs are fully cooled before disposing of ash
🚫 Never use a BBQ indoors or in enclosed spaces – this can be extremely dangerous and lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Don’t leave electrical devices charging unattended ⚡

That’s the reminder from on-call firefighters in Long Eaton after they attended a house fire in Sawley earlier this week, caused by a remote control car being left on charge.

The occupants were out at the time, so thankfully no one was injured. However, the fire caused quite a bit of damage, as you can see from the photos.

⚠️ Avoid charging devices while you’re asleep or out of the house. For all our electrical safety advice, visit: https://ow.ly/hmLv50Z5zyj

Thando Ndlovu was just 15 years old when he drowned in open water near Swarkestone Bridge in 2021💧

No matter how hot the weather gets, open water remains very cold, sending your body into shock. There are also hidden dangers lurking under the water that you could get trapped in.

We’re resharing this message as we head into the weekend as a timely reminder following recent tragic incidents in lakes, rivers, and at the coast.

Please take a moment to watch and share to help us prevent accidental drownings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jz5t3BA6rQ

Yesterday, our Community Education Officers were at Water Swallows in Buxton, speaking to around 60 young people by the quarry.

They shared advice on the dangers of open water, including cold water shock, what to do in an emergency and how to get help quickly. They also highlighted what3words and demonstrated a portable rescue device known as a throwline 🛟

Many had heard about recent water deaths across the UK. For those who hadn’t, the team shared this to highlight the very real risks.

We don’t advise visiting disused quarries like this one, as they are often on private land and the water can hide serious hazards beneath the surface. If you do visit, please make sure you understand the risks and follow our water safety advice so you know what to do if something goes wrong ⚠️www.derbys-fire.gov.uk/safety/water-safety

Please also don’t bring BBQs, take your rubbish home and leave these places as you found them👏
