Celebrating Volunteers' Week, we chat to Sue, a volunteer at Kedleston Hall’s second-hand bookshop. 📚

Previously a Primary School teacher, Sue’s volunteering journey began in 2001 as an Education Volunteer at Calke Abbey, followed by Mr Straw’s House in Worksop, The Children’s Country House at Sudbury, and now Kedleston Hall.

Revealing her bookshop memories, Sue said:

'I love meeting and talking to people – I’ve had so many wonderful experiences. Once a visitor was thrilled to find a book because her father illustrated it.’

‘It’s also rewarding to see three generations of one family come in – a lot of grandparents bring children, and when you volunteer on the same day you often see the same families each week which is really special.'

🌟With this dedication and passion found across all of our volunteers, a big thank you from everyone at Kedleston Hall!🌟

Our second-hand book shop is found in our stableyard, open daily 9.30-4pm.

In less than a week’s time, on Saturday 23rd May, join us for a special Derby Book Festival event 📖

We are welcoming award winning author Deepa Anappara to discuss her book, ‘The Last of Earth.’

Sian Hoyle from Derby Book Festival says:

‘We are delighted to be working in partnership with the National Trust in the wonderful setting of Kedleston Hall to coincide with their latest exhibition’

Not only hosted in Kedleston’s historic interiors, this unique experience includes an after-hours visit of our exhibition ‘How Did We Get Here?’

At the centre of the exhibition, discover ‘Encounters’, a specially commissioned film by British-Tibetan designer and artist Nyima Murry.

This captures intimate conversations between members of the Tibetan community living in Britian and highlights culturally significant Tibetan objects from Kedleston Hall.

On International Museum Day, join us for an insider tour of Kedleston Hall’s historic museum alongside our Property Curator Morgan.

Housing over 1000 objects from across Asia, it was developed by Lord Curzon, who was Viceroy of India at the start of the 20th century and complements Kedleston Hall’s show palace status - designed as a temple to the arts.

Unusually for a private home, the museum was also set up with the help of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum as part of Kedleston’s ground floor refurbishment 150 years after the hall was built.

Most recently, culturally significant Tibetan objects from the museum are featured in Kedleston Hall’s newest exhibition, ‘How Did We Get Here?’, co-curated with members of the Tibetan community living in Britain.

Intrigued? Come and visit our musuem, take a closer look at these objects, and discover our exhibition to uncover more.
