"We've done everything we can... so why aren't they going?"

It's a question many families and support teams have asked.

The place is arranged.
The support is there.
Plans have been made.

Then the next morning comes, and suddenly it feels impossible.

From the outside, it can look like a young person isn't trying. But often, there's much more going on beneath the surface.

Sometimes anxiety takes over.
Sometimes confidence disappears.
Sometimes a situation that felt manageable yesterday feels overwhelming today.

Progress isn't always a straight line.

A young person not attending doesn't mean they don't care, aren't listening or don't want a positive future. It may simply mean they need more time, more support or a different approach.

At Oasis Care, we've learned that pushing harder isn't always the answer. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is stay consistent, keep the door open and try again tomorrow.

One thing we’ve learned working with young people in supported accommodation:

When a young person finds something they genuinely care about, everything else can start to shift.

Structure and boundaries matter, but so does giving young people the opportunity to explore interests, whether that’s music, sport, cooking, art, or learning practical skills.

When a young person finds something that feels like it belongs to them, engagement often follows. Confidence starts to build.

Sometimes progress doesn’t come from pushing harder.
Sometimes it comes from finding the spark.

Some young people need time before they feel ready to join in.

Before they take part.
Before they start conversations.
Before they trust the people around them.

They're watching.

They're noticing who keeps their promises, who stays calm when things don't go to plan, and who treats others with kindness and respect.

From the outside, it might look like they're keeping their distance. But often, they're doing something very important – working out whether they feel safe, valued and understood.

Building trust doesn't happen overnight. It starts with small moments, consistency and genuine care.

Sometimes, the young people saying the least are noticing the most.

At Oasis Care in Derby, we know that every positive relationship starts with trust. 💙

Small moments carry more weight than we realise.

A lot of support work is talked about in terms of interventions, plans, and outcomes.

But sometimes, the moments young people remember most are much smaller than that.

A conversation in the kitchen.
Someone remembering something they said earlier in the week.
Offering a phone charger when they’re stressed and trying not to show it.

On the surface, those things can seem insignificant.
But for a young person still figuring out whether adults are safe, reliable, or genuinely there for them, those moments matter.
Not because of the object itself.
Because of what it represents.

Being noticed.
Being thought about.
Someone responding calmly when they didn’t have to.

Support is often remembered in moments professionals barely notice.
And over time, those small interactions are usually what relationships end up being built from.

We’re proud to have joined Derby’s No Place for Hate campaign alongside so many other organisations across the city.

For many young people, feeling safe, accepted, and respected isn’t something they’ve consistently experienced.

That’s why creating environments built on empathy, inclusion, and understanding matters, not just in words, but in everyday practice.

We’re pleased to stand alongside others across Derby in taking that commitment forward.

A lot of the work our staff do won’t ever fully show up in reports, outcomes, or incident logs.

It’s in the everyday moments.

The check-ins.
The patience.
The calm response after a difficult day.

Still showing up consistently, even when progress feels slow.

Supporting young people isn’t always straightforward.
It takes emotional resilience, adaptability, and the ability to keep building relationships over time.

We’re proud of the care, consistency, and commitment our staff bring into the work every day.

Not just when things are going well, but especially when they’re not.

Thank you to all of our team for the work you do behind the scenes that often goes unseen, but makes a real difference.

A good day out in Derby with one of our young people recently ☀️

Food, a walk around the city, and a chance to enjoy the weather for a bit.

Sometimes it’s the days with the least pressure that young people engage the most.

At Oasis Care, we don’t believe in “one size fits all.”
We believe in one person at a time, and doing what’s right for them.

That belief runs through every part of our work, from our residential homes and supported accommodation to our community projects and staff development. We work with young people and adults aged 16–65, many with complex needs, learning disabilities, or mental health challenges.

But our mission is bigger than meeting care needs.
It’s about building relationships, restoring dignity, and creating space for people to thrive, not just survive.

We’re proud to be a care provider that takes the time, trains our staff properly, listens with intention, and follows through with action. If you want to know more about what we stand for, we’d love you to read a little more about us.
