Congratulations to Cllr Joshua Sheard for becoming the new Kirklees Conservatives Deputy Group Leader 👏

I’m incredibly proud to have been elected Deputy Leader of the Kirklees Conservatives tonight.

I believe Conservatism is at its best when it stands up for the people who work hard, take responsibility, support their families and contribute to their communities every single day.

Most people don’t expect miracles from councillors. They simply want value for the money they pay. Safer streets, decent services and pride in the places they call home. Those are not unreasonable demands, they are the foundations of a strong society.

I believe in lower taxes where possible, backing local businesses, rewarding hard work and giving communities more control over their own future instead of endless bureaucracy, waste and red tape. Strong communities are built by people, families, volunteers and local enterprise, not by government trying to run every aspect of life.

Kirklees has huge potential. We have proud towns, hardworking residents and communities full of people who care deeply about where they live. I want to help build a Conservative Party that reflects those values: free, democratic, optimistic, practical, ambitious, safe and rooted firmly in common sense.

As Deputy Leader, my priority will always be standing up for residents, holding decision-makers to account and supporting policies that genuinely improve life for people across Kirklees.

Politics should always put residents before party interests.

The Conservatives need change, and I hope to be that positive change. 💙

Congratulations to Cllr John Taylor for becoming the new Kirklees Conservatives Group Leader 👏

Congratulations to Cllr John Taylor for becoming the new Kirklees Conservatives Group Leader 👏

Last night, the Kirklees Conservative Group held its Annual General Meeting following the recent local elections. Our Group, now consisting of nine councillors, unanimously elected me as Leader of the Conservative Group on Kirklees Council.

It is a great honour to have the support and confidence of my colleagues at what will undoubtedly be a challenging time for both our Group and the Council as a whole.
The political landscape in Kirklees has changed significantly, but I am determined that we will continue to work hard, provide strong opposition where necessary, and achieve positive results for residents across the borough — including, of course, the people of Kirkburton Ward who I am proud to represent.

I am also delighted that Joshua Sheard has been elected as Deputy Leader of the Group. Josh is a well respected and hardworking councillor for Birstall and Birkenshaw, and I look forward to working with him as my deputy.

I would also like to place on record my sincere thanks to Cllr David Hall for his leadership of the Group over the past decade. David always supported me in my early days as a councillor, and I know many colleagues will share my appreciation for the dedication and commitment he has shown during his ten years as Group Leader. While I am naturally disappointed that he was unsuccessful in seeking re-election, his contribution to our Group and to local politics should not be underestimated.

The hard work now continues.

Leave the ECHR and repeal the Human Rights Act to secure Britain’s borders

Scrap green levies and ideological net zero targets to deliver cheaper energy.

Hire 10,000 more police and increase stop and search to make our streets safe.

Restore the two child benefit cap, and face-to-face PIP assessments to get Britain working

Increase defence spending by £50 billion, using savings made to the welfare budget to defend our country.

Scrap the 3% interest added to Plan 2 student loans and get under 16s off social media to help young people.

That’s what the Conservatives under Kemi Badenoch's leadership would do.
