Tomorrow 4th July is independence day in the United States of America. The trouble that surrounded this important day hopefully will have no long term resemblance to our Brexit fall out in the UK

4 July 1776:
The American Revolution
By issuing the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on 4 July, 1776, the 13 American colonies severed their political connections to Great Britain.

The War of Independence which followed came after a decade of growing estrangement between the thirteen British colonies and the crown.

The Revolution was both an international conflict, with Britain and France vying on land and sea, and a civil war among the colonists, causing over 60,000 loyalists to flee their homes.

Seven years later, after successfully defying George III, the colonies created the United States of America. As a republic in an age of monarchies the new nation challenged the old order, demonstrating how a small fledgling nation could win its freedom from the greatest military force of its time.
