Walmer Castle & Gardens

Walmer Castle & Gardens Come and explore the eight acres of beautiful gardens and see what's within the castle walls. Find a recently opened secondhand bookshop in the basement.
(1092)

Originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery defenses it evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Through this role, past residents have included The Duke of Wellington, William Pitt the Younger, Sir Winston Churchill, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The Castle allows you the chance to explore the rooms, including that where the D

uke of Wellington died. Outside you can explore the stunning gardens including the famous Broadwalk, the kitchen garden, the Queen Mother's Garden, and the woodland walk. The castle has recently been reimagined with new look interiors, previously untold stories and displays. There's now even more reason to come and see us! Posts by Harry and the site team. HOUSE RULES

This month we are celebrating the vibrant spectrum of life at Walmer Castle.

Our gardens are in full bloom, echoing the beautiful diversity of our community. As we celebrate Pride we're reminded of the complex, often hidden stories that form the fabric of our history here.

Did you know Walmer Castle has a unique connection to LGBTQ+ history? William Lygon, the 7th Earl Beauchamp served as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and spent significant time at Walmer Castle. His story is a poignant chapter in the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, reminding us of the progress made and the journey that continues here and abroad.

Today we honour those who paved the way and celebrate the freedom to be authentically yourself. Come wander through the rainbow hues of our gardens and reflect on the stories that make this place so special.

What is the spookiest kind of author? ... A ghostwriter.

No tricks this weekend, only treats!

We've got everything from love stories for the romantics, stories of far off planets for those that want to believe and mysteries that will get those little grey cells working overtime.

Check out our website for more information and the programme of events. All prose, no cons!

*Please note that not all authors will be accepting card purchases.
